Message: Yes and not necessarily.
More probable causes of poor fuel mileage is
leaking injectors and 'worn out' O2 sensors
along with "plugged" cats , burnt plugs, deteriorated plug wiring, bad rotor.
Also if Throttle body becomes too 'dirty'
especially in the area of the Idle Air Control
( back of throttle body ) , it will have some effect.

Message: To answer the rest of the question, remove the cap and check the Dist shaft for sideways play. It's the bushings that can wear out. They are replaceable. Much much cheaper then a new dist.

Message: its depends on what year it is as well, I have an 88 and it uses a fuel pressure regulator and if goes bad it can make it use an ungodly amount of fuel, but if that was the case it would also be running very bad. ie rough.

Message: The throttle body injection trucks use a vac
operated regulator at idle 15psi when you step
on it should raise to 22psi
This system is also controled by the o2 sensor
located in the exhaust manifold
