Subject: Question about Adding Freon IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I changed the evaporator in my 98 dakota last year, now im ready to recharge my a/c. Do I have to have the system vacuumed out before I can recharge it with Freon? Some guys have told me to just charge it up and it will work, others say you have to get it vacuumed first??
thanks

Message: Yes, you'll want to evac it to remove the air and more importantly moisture. This will also find any leaks.
Once you evac'd it, no leaks were found you can add the refrigerant. if you do this yourself, be sure to add some oil (some R134s come with oil mixed in). Open the vehicle doors, turn on the a/c to high and add.
harbor freight has their a/c manifold gauge set on sale, $40 usually over $60.

Message: Before you recharge the system you might want to change the orifice and screen while the system is empty ....

Message: better change the drier too and pray the rest will hold. you should have done all that and at least pulled a vacuum when you changed the evap. all the moisture that was trapped in there from last year when you changed the evap probably played hell with the entire system.
good luck.
