"guys, i don't think it's his timing chain or his a/c comp. if you read his 3rd to last post he says he put 91 octane and the noise stopped. that would indicate pinging." Yup, I believe I said that at least 3 times. And if it is pinging that stops with higher octane gas, yes, you will get better gas mileage using the fuel that doesn't ping. But you have an underlying problem that hasn't been found yet. It should not need 91 octane. Mine runs fine on 87 with the highest summer temperatures and loads.

You're right Bob, "It should not need 91 octane" but if this is the case I shouldn't need colder plugs either; I'm pretty sure plugs from the dealer were used when I did the tune-up last August. Everyone seems to be taking guesses, but no one sounds sure. I don't want to rack up a huge bill following guesses, what would you do??

Since you bought it used, maybe the previous owner had a superchip or reprogrammed the computer. I have a 2000 3.9L, and I get that same pinging sound when I accidently put 87 in. Of course, It goes away when a higher octane gas is used.

The answer to the problem is likely to be
the belly pan gasket on the intake manifold.
It's a common problem with Magnum motors.

There that's my 2 cents

Also you could have carbon buildup on your valves and/or pistons....which will cause detonation...

Sounds like your base timing is off. Put a timing light on to
check. Also what is the engine temp after it is warmed up?

I have a 2003 Dakota 3.9l. I notice a knocking sound coming from the front of my engine on cold startup. I do not hear it after it fully warms up. What could it be? I have about 60,000 miles on it and just had a tuneup done but the knock is still there when cold. engine seems to run good otherwise. I am the second owner and don't know if the previous owner messed with timing or programming of the ecm. I'm guessing its all factory set due to the plugs and distributor cap being original before performing the tune up.
