Message: I have a 2002 Dakota 3.9L 4x4. My trans shifts really hard when i put the pedal down to pass someone down the highway. it will down a few gears and take off, rev to about 5000 rpm then jerk into next gear. If im just cruising threw town, takin it easy, it shifts alot smoother. only does it when i put the pedal to the floor and it drops down a gear. any ideas? normal? trans needs to be rebuilt? Thanx guys

Message: Repalce the pressure sensor and sol around $200
it does not need to be rebuilt
The gov pressure is controled by the comp and
these sensors are well known for going bad
Also do a filter and fluid change when doing this
use good fluid no dextron or supertech from
walmart
ATF +3 or +4
Amsoil universal synthetic
redline syn
These 3 are what you want

Message: You will find them inside the trans
after you remove the pan this is a messy job they
have no drain plug and must be removed when full
Go to auto zone they have the big yello drain pans
start unbolting it pass side bolts first get them
all out except the row on the drivers side just
losen these very little
If the pan has been on for any length of time
line the drain pan with pass side of trans pan
take a med to big screw driver and pop the pan
lose on pass side the fluid will start to come
out line the drain pan as best you can to catch it
Now slowly losen the drivers side row slowly 1 at
a time a little at a time and the pan will begain
to tilt and more and more fluid will come out
when you get near removing all the bolts driver
row hold the pan take the last bolts out and
slowly tip the pan so it drains into drain pan
Like I said very messy
now take the pan out and dump all remaining fluid
out
Finding some black residue and some tiny pieces
of alm is normal but big piles of black clutch
or band material or big chunks of alm is not
get some paper towels and wipe pan out clean
Get the repalacement pressure sensor and sol
from chrysler
Now look at the sensors you will see them on the
side of valve body allen wrence to remove be
carefull to save the o rings they do not come
with new ones remove slowly and note position of
the rubber o rings so you get them back in right
be sure there is no dirt or debry and install the
new ones tighten slowly nad evenly the elect
wire just unplugs be sure you plug it back in
good seated all the way on the plug
There are 4 things on the side
pressure sensor
pressure sol
O/D overdrive sol
L/U lockup sol
That is why I say get the parts so you can look
and be sure you take the right ones out
Now replace the filter and bolt the pan back on
The filter kits come with filter and 2 gaskets
the A500 and A518 use the same filter diff gasket
But they send it with the gasket all folded and
bent get the correct gasket and set it on a table
with like a big box over it flat for a few hours
this will make the gasket stay flat and be eiser
to install it trying to instal a bent and folded
gasket you could esily mess up lay it flat on
the pan and slowly put it up in place and get
some bolts started
Now get 6 Qts fluid dump 4 in start and check
once you just hit the safe mark check for leaks
take it for a ride and warm it up good and recheck
must be running to check
Its also a good idea to hold the brake and shift
from drive nutral rev and back to park a few times
and than check running in either nutral or park
Like I said just touch the safe mark on stick
than warm it up on a good ride and recheck
The fluid will expand and you do not want to
over fill overfilling can cause foaming and
make the trans run hot
Thats it
Have fun and have lots of rags handy its about
the messest job you will ever find LOL

Message: Larry,I installed a drain plug on my 88 17 years ago and have never had a problem with a leak and it makes it alot easier to change fluids. Why isn't this recommended?I still have the truck and have never had a problem with a leak around the plug.

Message: It would be up to the indavidual if they want to
install a drain plug kit
Thats the same as saying why did the factory not
put one in there
Yes its a good idea makes the job a lot cleaner
Yes all 96 and up have the RE transmission and
the pressure sensor and sol
