Subject: Ball joint? Squeeking? IP: Logged
Message: During the colder weather, when I would accelerate i would hear a slight squeeking noise in the front end. It seems as I would speed up, it would go away. Somedays i hear it, some days I dont. As weird as what it sounds, when its warmer outside, it doesnt seem to make it? Is this a ball joint or what? I was on the expressway going about 60 mph, and heard a pop, pop, pop noise, then it quit. Not sure if I ran over something, although i didnt see anything in the road. I listened to my truck, and i could hear a slight rubbing noise now, but no squeak. The rubbing noise is very decrete. Its not noticable. Any clues? Help!? Is this same to keep driving, or will it do anymore damage.

Message: This could be a u-joint. Squeaks when under load, at cruising speed, with no load it either goes away or road noise covers it. My 92 started it when I pulled a friend's sailboat. On the gas it squeaked, cruising it didn't. Without the boat, it didn't squeak, so I let it go for a while. Soon it was doing it on the highway, and I got it home and changed them both. One was turning to dust.
BTW-the front is larger than the rear on the Gen IIs.

Message: I have a 2002 and having the same problem....I'm not sure what it is either but it seems to happen when I shake my truck or turn the wheel to the left and then right fast. My noise is coming from the front drivers side. Let me know if yours is the same?

Message: That sounds about like mine. When i turn my steering wheel a certain way to the left, it makes an odd noise. How long can you drive with a bad U-joint?? So far, since i've initally notice the noise, its been about 2 months. But like i said, it doesnt happen all the time. Should I get this fixed pretty quickly? Whats the consequences if it get worse?

Message: Okay, now we know it does it when you turn the wheel AND it's a 4X4.
That most likely eliminates the driveshaft u-joint, but how about an AXLE u-joint/CV joint?
When the wheel is turned it stresses the bearings in said joint. Get them checked soon, you could be looking at a costly repair if one fails.

Message: Mine is a 2002 4x2 and mine doesn't happen all the time too but it happens at slow speeds. At fast speeds, it goes away.
