Message: Got my turbo in yesterday! woo hoo!!!!
just went a picked it up at my parent's house. So far i have noticed a few things:
it looks like it has been sitting in a barn for a while....
the blades move freely and have no play in them at all
there is a remanufacture tag on it
the turbine A/R is .82
the turbine inlet is about 2"/outlet about 2.5"
the compressor inlet is about 2"/outlet about 2"
bought some stuff and i am going to clean it up and try to make it look new... in my opinion... worth the $100 ;-)

Message: Update-
turbo has been taken apart and cleaned very well. Lots of brake cleaner and simple green with a wire brush. Rinse oil through the bearing housing and the blades spin even better (woo hoo). Bought all new shiney hardware for it and have painted the turbine housing black with VHT 1500 degree paint (that stuff smells like the track compound, hmmmmm....). I have a new compressor housing on order. It is for a hose inlet/outlet hookup so i dont need to fab any flanges for that. It is highly polished and will raise the coolness point signifficantly.
Sorry for the paragraph and to the people who dont give a d@mn but some have asked for updates... i have been taking pics so i will get them up in the next couple of days!
ps. just got eight fordmotorsport 24# injectors for free yesterday! slightly used from a corvette but i will check to see if they are what they are.

Message: That's great Intense! Please keep us posted, and pics would be appreciated too. Sounds like you definitely got your $100 worth. What are you going to do about headers? I know that Bernd's kit uses its own header system. Also, how did you manage to get free injectors? Being chev, will they fit - I know the Ford ones do. What kind of hp are you expecting, and will you have to do engine work? With a 2" inlet, where will it hook up?

Message: damnit lesley... i already for got what your first question was ;-)
i am going to fab up my own headers. i have a source that will hook me up with the flanges and i will probably buy one of those header build up kits from summitracing. It will take time. The injectors are fordmotorsport aftermarket injectors that one of my dads friend's friend had on his corvette to up the goodies. My dad bought a TPI unit for his camaro from his friend and that guy included the injectors but my dad never used it so he gave me the injectors (woo hoo!)! I talked to someone to see if i would get 300 hp at the crank with just 7# of boost (all i really want) and he said easily. The deminsions i gave earlier are the size where the wheels are at.. not the size of the adapter. I will probably run 2.5 inch piping or 3" depending on how it all fits together. There is no adapter for the turbine i will have to weld flanges to it. but that will be even more fun... probably to a 2.5" in and a 3" out for the turbin and have a full three inch exhaust going out the side of my truck (with a cat of course).
todd.... i am glad i am moving in a week ;-)
this wont be anywhere near as pretty as tom/bernd's kit but it will do for my budget i am trying to use (less than $500)

Have you ever visited the www.dodgetrucks.org site? There is a Turbo/Superchargers forum on there. The guys on that board are hard-core work-on-my-own-truck-dammit type of guys with lots of answers.
Heh, heh, you answered a question I forgot to ask: how much boost you were expecting. With 7# you don't have to get into all that rebuilding, right?

Message: i wont have to rebuild but before everything is done i am going to take the intake manifold of to do some cutting and stuff and take the heads off to clean up the runners and bowls. When i do this i will get (of course) new head gaskets and switch to head studs instead of bolts... help hold things in the chambers.
i only want seven because that should be safe for the power output and keeping the pistons stock. Plus the turbo is an old turbo that the guys at turbonetics said wont pull more than 8# on my motor... good nuf for me!
i dont know if i can build my own headers either but i am going to find out ;-)

Message: well.... bad news.
girlfriends alero has been down for about a month now. internal and external coolant leak through the intake manifold gasket. i have been taking it apart and have got everything out. Went to go and buy an intake manifold gasket set and found out that they are on national back order for about 1 more month.... crap :-(
i have decided that i will turbocharger her car because i need my truck together and wont have the time to take it apart... and since its a front drive the, the exhaust manifolds connect and i wouldnt have to make my own headers. Plus the injectors are the same style as on the Alero and the 3.4 liter will work a little better because the turbo is a little on the small side. plus, since her car wont be running for a least on more month i have plenty of time to do it...
here are the specs for her car.
1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL2
180 HP 3.4 Liter
coupe with ground effects and spoiler.
has been in an oldsmobile magazine and on the internet.
not a dodge but at least a six!
here are the things i had to take off to get to the intake manifold (damn you G.M.!!)
air intake
coolant resevoir
5 coolant lines
throttle body
mass air flow sensor
alternator
powersteering pump
brackets
spark plug
fuel injectors/rail
upper manifold
thermostat
coil packs
smog pump (they still have these?)
about 15 different sensors
(now here are the good ones)
valve covers (what?!)
rocker arms (what?!?!?!)
pushrods (what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)
so basically the whole engine is out...

| RE: Turbo! IP: Logged
Message: Turbos force air into the TB, basically yeah. Neat little critters really.
A Turbo is basically a turbine, or pair of turbines, stuck together. Think jet engine, since I've seen Turbo's modified to -be- jet engines... odd people with way to much time on their hands, heh.
Ah, anyway. One turbine side is exposed to the exhaust gasses, and is actually spun by the pressure from the exhaust gasses. The other side has an air cleaner on it, then passes on to the TB. So when exhaust spins the turbine on the exhaust side, it drives the turbine on the intake side, which forces air into the TB.
Problem is, too much exhaust pressure will blow the turbine and/or cause to much air pressure to be sent to the engine. So they make wastegates on the exhaust side. Think of these basically as limiter valves on how much is allowed into the exhaust side of the turbine to make it spin.
Now, coming out of the Turbo and heading towards the TB, we've got a pair of problems. One being that, if the throttle is closed, where is the pressure going to go? It's either going to blow the airhat off the TB, or blow back into the Turbine and blow it apart. So we've got blow-off valves, these are basically spring loaded valves that open and exhaust pressure when the pressure reaches a certian point. Higher performance valves open faster and keep the turbine spinning at higher RPMS when the throttle is closed, so you build 'boost' faster when you get back into it.
Second problem is the temperature of the air coming out of the Turbo. It's darned hot do to friction and the fact that the Turbo itself gets pretty warm (you could cook an egg on it, easy). So we've got intercoolers, these nifty little devices are basically radiators that cool the air before it hits the engine. You don't always -need- them, but they are a good idea if you want good performance. :0)
Boost gauges are, in my opinion, just there because they are darned cool to look at. :0)

Message: dakbuilder,
i just ran the nitrous. I dont have a supercharger. The right size turbo for the application will produce more power than a supercharger. Another benefit of a turbo is the adjustability. You can adjust the boost with a proper wastegate or a valve in the wastegate bleed. The only downside of a turbo is the expense... very expensive unless you are going for the "I-am-20-years-old-and-cant-afford-food-much-less-bernds-kit" way about it like me... ebay and doing it yourself
