Subject: Tranfer case went out IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 4wd Dakota with a 5 speed manual transmission. I was on a steep hill and shifted into low range to be able to start easier. When I let the clutch out there was a loud bang and the truck jumped into neutral.\,I thought. When I tried to shift into high range it still was like it was in neutral. The shifter on the TC was still moving the lever on the TC but no go. sometimes I would get it to go but it would then appear to jump out of gear and not move. It is now completely stuck in low range and no power to the wheels. Help!, does anyone have info on this. thanks

Message: If your lucky you broke the chain and it's locked because the chain is wound up in there. The chain is not that hard to change. Just hope if it is the chain, it never took something out along with it. When the chain breaks, as a rule it is under heavy power and it does make a loud bang.

Message: I have a New Process 231 TC will the 207 go in? Will other model years work, say a 1996. The TC had about 220000 miles on it. It ran quiet but I could hear it trying to engage into 4wd when the rear tires would spin in 2wd. I adjusted the shift linkage to try to eliminate this but it would still do it.

Message: Ok here's what happened. I bought a used transfer case from a local yard, a 1996 231 with about 100000 miles on it. I put it in in 2 hours and problem fixed. Funny thing is that the old one was running really bad and it came on so slowly that I didn't notice it. The new one is much quieter, smoother and has much less play when I let off the gas. I'm thinking of opening up the old one just to see what happened. Question: is there a better lubricant than the ATF-3 that is recomended for this unit?
