Ok. I have a question and want to see if my diagnosis is accurate seeing how I have yet to test the sensor itself due to a lack of an analog meter.

I have a 97 CC 3.9L 4x4 5-speed manual trans. The engine has been idling a bit rough for a while. About a week ago the engine would occassionally bog down and then the lurching would start (lurching like you were showing a 15 year old how to drive a stick for the first time). I would press in the clutch and the engine would line out and run fine and then continue once again as I let the clutch out and put the transmission back into gear.
At first I thought there was trans problems but my uncle looked at it with me and told me to start checking sensors.
First I checked the MAP sensor, good constant 5V from the PCM and shows good on the readings.
Second was the TP sensor, good constant 5V but would only go to about 3.7V with wide open throttle. I changed that and prayed it was the only problem. It wasn't. The rough idle has come down a bit and it runs fairly much the same with the occassional bogging and lurching. This typically clears up and can be driven more but does sometimes become undrivable at times because it doesnt want to clear up.

This is where my question comes from. I was thinking that since it only happens with the truck in gear and driving that the speed sensor was maybe to blame. Alas it looks like this is tied in somehow with the Crank Position Sensor behind the right manifold on the block. So its real easy to get to, NOT! I did get a code light showing but I am not sure if there is a trick to making the codes show without an actual code reader. Any ideas?
Also, is anyone familiar with this problem enough to know if my diagnosis is accurate?

Please help because this is my only form of transportation and my last name is not Rockefeller so a mechanic is almost completely out of the question.

More likely the IAC = 'Idle Air Control'
back of throttle body - needing cleaning..
Re code = 97 needs a reader - no other way.
Check gas cap -on tight ?
May still need a new gas cap = must seal..
If you have a local 'Autozone ' or similar
they will usually read the code for free
hoping to sell you a needed part..

How are plugs ? Have you checked the gap ?
Not likely to have anything to do with CPS...

I think that you are right. I went to Sears and splurged a bit and bought an Innova OBDII code reader and got the following:

P0132 O2 sensor input voltage sustained above the normal operating range
P0505 A shorted or open condition detected in one or more of the idle air control motor circuits
P1294 Actual idle speed does not equal target idle speed

I recently replaced the spark plugs and wires. I also cleaned the input side of all the injectors and replaced one that was fouled pretty good. Dropped the gas tank and checked the internal filter and cleaned the fuel sending guage.

That being said, I now think that you are absolutely correct about the IAC. The P1294 code is a direct result from that as well. The O2 code (P0132) has me wondering though. Could that be from teh IAC or a seperate problem all together? Your thoughts?

I went to troublecodes.net and they had this to say about the P0132 code: Upstream O2S Shorted To Voltage

I plan to check the IAC tomorrow when I have some daylight to burn. If that shows good, could it be the upstream O2 sensor causing the bad idle and the related problems that I am having?

OK. I went ahead and started working on the truck in the dark because I have a new toy! I found the source for the IAC error. I had a mechanic look at the injectors about three weeks ago and it would seem that the retard left the IAC connector unplugged. I have a few things to tell him now...

Anywho, I ran the truck down the road and it started to run rough and give me some rough idle after I stopped to have a look at it. I could smell gas pretty bad so I was certain that the fuel mixture was a tad on the rich side! The check engine light never came on but I plugged the code reader in anyway and it gave me this:

P0172 Fuel system rich

What can I do to fix this with an MFI system? I have only recently become familiar with them so I am not familir with any adjustments that you can make.

Thanks for any input guys! This is actually progressing quite nicely in the scheme of things and I would like to get my truck back to full Dodge worthy mode again!

stop fooling around the o2 is the most important
sensor

go to ngk.com and get a new sensor

NGK NTK same as factory stay away from the bosch
there junk

obd2 the throttle will read aprox 12% at idle

watch the iac it will step up as throttle is
depresed
