I'm wondering if I'm looking at having to replace the computer.

I replaced the O2 sensor and picked up a new Air Intake solonoid. I tested it against the old one and they both checked out the same, within .01 ohm of each other ( .57-.58 vs. .56-.57 ) with the multimeter. I figured I could return the new part, but since I had it, might as well just replace it ( worst case scenario, I've got a spare ).

I replaced this after having the computer reset after replacing the O2 sensor because it tripped the Idle air solonoid code, along with a low voltage signal to the O2 sensor. After resetting the computer with the scanner ( autozone did this for me ), I get 10 mpg and a serious gargle/loss of power intermittently when I'm driving to work. It's almost like the TPS cuts out ( which I tested, it works fine sweeping the switch through the range and watching my Ohm values fluctuate )

I didn't have this problem before they reset the computer. It won't stay idling sometimes, other times it idles like it has a big cam in it, then runs the idle way up for a split second like a correction. If I floor the gas, it'll take off.

I dunno, without a good scan tool, I'm at a loss short of throwing more good money at parts that may still be fine ( which I can't afford )

When the truck is running fine, I get a burst of power @ 3000rpm until it shifts, but something affects the way the truck shifts also.

Being that this is a 1997 model, it seems that fewer people have a clue about this truck, as it only has the 1 O2 sensor, not 2 or 3 or 4. Just one like an OBD1 truck, but it's OBD2. Autozone tried to tell me I had to change on of the other O2 sensors....well, can't do that cuz I've already changed the only one it has!

I'm running without a Cat, which only lowered my fuel economy some, no change in performance in any way.

I'm beginning to wonder if the computer doesn't have a problem as when I first bought the truck it ran poorly because it had a blown out the fuse for the computer memory/radio/interior lights. The fuse is still good, but the check engine light is still on, and nothing I've done has shut it off for even an instant.

What brand of 02 sensor did you get ?
NTK or NGK is best - like original..
You can 'reset' the computer yourself by disconnecting negative of battery - turn key on and even to start position , then back off , then reconnect battery.
However there must be a code there that will tell
you what is really bad, first..

I bought the NGK sensor, and I'm sure it doesn't like the lack of a cat, but it was running fine with the cat out and the new sensor in. It started giving me the real problems once the computer was reset.

The codes I got were for an O2 sensor and the Idle Air Solonoid. I had those before the computer was cleared after removing the cat and replacing the 02 sensor and still have them after it was reset.

I'll probably just have to buck it and have a shop scan the thing proper.

I could have returned it if I hadn't installed it, but I'm not going to try, there's not much point to it. All I've done is definetively removed the solonoid from the equation.

How far have you driven since the reset? It can take several hundred miles to relearn everything.

I'd suspect bad electrical connections before anything else. Check ALL sensor and computer connectors, clean and regrease with new dielectric grease.

The reset was only a week ago, but the problem is that before it was reset, it ran a ton better. After the reset, nothing but poor performance. I wonder if something can get screwed up resetting the computer with a scan tool( like pulling a memory card out of a device before it's done writing to it ).

The codes had been checked and cleared before this and I didn't have the driveability problem ( that was this last fall ).

I suggest reseting the computer yourself, then driving it for awhile. Drive it through out the entire RPM range. The computer will relearn the sensors.

can I accomplish that by pulling the 10amp memory fuse for a while and then reinstalling it? The reason being that if I pull a battery post cable, I'll have to replace it, which at the moment, I'd prefer not to do even though it needs doing. I don't have access to a scanner myself.
