Message: Symptons: pinging, low oil consumption between oil changes.
Pinging is bad and the oil being burned causes excess carbon and gunk build up.Worst case pinging blows a hole through your piston or messes up a headgasket.
To check for a bad plenium gasket take the air hat off your throttle body and open the TB using a flash light look for oil puddles along the bottom of intake.
Fixing it is easy. Drain coolant.
Take off AC (set aside)alternator and remove accessory bracket the ac and alternator were attached to.Disconnect and remove TB. Release fuel pressure and remove injectors and set to the side. Disconnect vaccuum hoses and Temp sensor remove upper radiator hose. Start to unbolt manifold slowly and evenly remove the hose between water pump and manifold. Sometime u need to remove one or both of the valve covers sometimes not. Lift it out and port match if u wish replace belly pan gasket make sure the belly pan itself isnt warped
Install: clean up everything put new gaskets in and make sure u put RTV where the gaskets meet on the heads and block. To assist on putting it in straight ... if u are using new bolts take 2 of the old bolts cut the heads off put a slit in them for a screw driver and thread them into the heads slightly so u can use them as guides.
I would recommend putting an aluminum belly pan in to avoid the belly pan gasket from blowing out again and put in dealership gaskets they are much higher quality. I bought a set of felpro gaskets and they were a cork/rubber mix and junk .

Message: I changed mine out when I didn't need to. I was getting, what I thought, a pinging so I looked down the throttle body and saw some oil. I changed it out with no change in the noise, which ended up being the timing chain on my 97 V6 auto. I went ahead and used the aluminum kit from hughes, to prevent future problems. If it is the timing chain, and you are getting a pinging/rattle, you can put a stethescope on the very front of the oil pan which is right under the timing chain while the engine is running and hear it.

Message: A small amount of oil lieing in the bottom of the intake manifold is not uncommon due to crankcase air being sucked in through the PCV line, carrying a little oily blow-by with it. However, if you disconnect and cap the PCV system such that there is no vacuum source acting upon the crankcase, but you're still able to measure negative pressure in the crankcase with the engine idling, THEN it's a good possibility the plenum gasket is leaking.
I experienced the same thing as Peter - had what I swore must be pinging. But before I had time to attack the plenum gasket, my water pump went out so I went ahead and replaced the timing belt at the same time. Guess what - quiet engine now. For what it's worth, I did see a little oil in the bottom of the manifold, but as I said, I really think it is from the PCV.

...which is quite inexpensive to construct and could be connected to the PCV hose coming out of the valve cover.
Or they used to sell a little vacuum guage that layed flat on the oil filler opening. I don't know if they still sell those or not.
If the vacuum is strong enough, you can detect it by loosening the the oil filler cap and gently lifting it up off the valve cover a very tiny bit and letting it lay back down - you'll feel it will tend to be sucked down against its seat.
Any of these methods are certainly cleaner that using your lips as a vacuum sensor.
