Message: 97-99 was one gen then 2000-2004 another. There were slight changes to design but nothing major that I am aware.
I guess I would ask why are you asking? Are you considering a swap from one truck to another?

Message: Most people would consider 86-89 Gen1, 90-96 Gen2, 97-2004 Gen3. no they are not the same. some have simalarities like the same drivetrain and what not, but mostly different.

Message: Enthusiasts consider '05 gen 4; while DC calls it gen 3. DC lumps gens 1&2 together, we tend to make a distinction of gen 2 when they lengthened the nose for a v8. There have been numerous changes to some components, while many others have stayed the same. The 4.7 motor and 45RFE (and similar 545RFE) transmision combination became available in '00, replacing the 5.2. Good package.

Message: don't forget the suspenion differences.
I had a 95 CC 4x4 and now have an 02 QC 4x4. Both great trucks, both fun to drive, both reliable. One 3.9L and the other 4.7L. no complaints with either.
depending what year you get from 96-04 you're looking at 3.9/5.2/5.9 or 3.7/4.7. The 3.7/4.7 have slightly better fuel economy and more power than previous engines.

Message: while your correct about the 3.7 having more power, i wouldnt necesarily consider it a better engine. the dyno's show the 3.9 having more low end than the 3.7, which is what makes a truck engine,... a truck engine. and the 4.7 doesnt really have more power, 5 hp is nothing. and the torque isnt better either. 295ftlbs at 3600rpm? the 5.2 is 295(or 300 depending on year) ft-lbs @ 3200rpm. more low end with 5.2.

Message: the 3.7 and 4.7 basicly start a new GEN cause they are the diamler motors and the dakotas and durango and rams electronics changed to certain degree.... function and stlye.... 5 more or less hp and the same to the torque really isnt that noticeable.... but to me the the new motors seem responsive then the previous motors...
