Subject: Pinging V-6 IP: Logged
Message: Have had a ping in my 01 Dakota 3.9 that seems to be getting worse. Plugs and wires have been replaced and fuel pressure is 50# with no drop when it pings. A reliable pro at Dodge told me that distributor bushing was probably bad. However, the ping only happens when engine is fully hot. Why wouldn't the distributor problem show up cold or hot? Any clues? Thanks, Greg

Message: well your ignition timing is computer controlled... if its pinging going out the road when hot or at operating temp then the timing is most likely off... so you might have that checked....

Message: Most likely your plenum gasket is leaking Or could be a vacumn hose somewhere. this causes a lean mixture there for spark knock. hotter the engne the worse it can knock/ping. Use some starter fluid(VERY CAREFULLY) and just quick sperts with a 6 inch extention on the spray can. if/when you hear the engine speed up for a couple of seconds give or take you found the leak.Now. If this isn't the problem then you can bet theres something wrong in the combustion chamber. Red hot carbin. Plug that screwes in a bit to far or what ever. Reason I'm saying it will be in there is because it has to be hot first to do it. Just logic.

if you live in a warmer area try a 180 thermo
1 range colder plug
autolite 3923 or we have been getting good
resaults with the NGK FR5 V power plugs

Message: This 'dealer death flash', is there a way to tell it was performed? Under the hood there is a sticker put on by the dealer with 'Reprogram Controller, Recall 8591'. I Googled that and came up with 'On board diagnostic system will not detect a catalyst failure'. It doesn't sound like a timing issue that the 'death flash' is.

Message: Call your local dealer. They look up the VIN and it shows all recalls performed.
Ask if the dread D-Flash was in the series.
I called about the ball joints before I bought the truck. Pretty cool what history they can tell you.

Message: Not to dis anybody else, but I beleive that Obio3 hit the nail on the head... Since the problem has consistantly gotten worse over time it's more than likely carbon build up in the combustion chambers, or the leaking plenum gasket... However the 01's should have the steel reinforced plenum gasket, unless I'm mistaken there, to keep it from blowing out like the old ones did... Anybody feel free to correct me if I am wrong on the gasket... The best top end cleaner on the market to remove deposits is GM's top end cleaner... Don't beleive me, just ask any dealership out there, they all use it... It will remove all carbon and gumming in the piston rings and on top of the piston... Just use a borascope before and after and you'll be able to see what I'm talking about... All you have to do is remove the plugs, add the cleaner, let it sit over night, put fender covers over the sides of the engine "the cleaner will eat away your paint if it gets on it", crank it over the next morning "to blow what cleaner is left in the cylinders out", then add a slight bit more cleaner, put the plugs back in, change the oil, then drive it like ya stole it... It will smoke outrageously for the first bit, but then it should start running about as good as new again... You might also consider using the complete bottle of red line's fuel system cleaner "treats 100 gallons - good for quick clean ups" to clean your injectors... Just because you've got good fuel pressure doesn't mean that the fuel is actually making it through the injector like it should... Have you ever had a relative fuel injector test done to your truck? You may even need to do two treatments to really clean them up good... This should take care of any pinging issues you've been experiancing... Hope this helps a little...
