 Subject: A/C question on 2001 3.9

I'm new to Dakota's. Are the A/C compressors normally noisy when engaged? Mine sounds a bit like its rattling. Its not obnoxiously loud but definitely more noticeable than any other car I've had (mostly GM's, one with an axial compressor and others with radial and variable displacement compressors)
Anybody else?

most of that noise your hearing is the A/C clutch... there a bit more of a gap then normal there and your hearing the clutch slip a bit cause they only pull in so far cause the magnetic feild is only strong enough to a certain degree... once the air gap gets to be to large between the clutch and pulley then it wont engage... and its also possible that you compressor it self could be making a bit of noise... i had this work on a dakota once, what i did is that i took a dye that is a oil also and ejected it into the high side of the A/C system so it would go through the compressor quicker then it would going through the low side cause it would have to travel around the whole system befor it would get to the compressor cause the other components would collect oil first that could trap some of it....

I once put 3or4or6cans of Freon in my Volvo. Sounded like all the bearings going at once.
Your A/C running right?

you gotta watch how much freon you add to a system.... if its an R12 system the more ya add the colder it gets but ya take the chance of it freezing up..... an R134a system you add to much of it, it will work backwards(not cool at all).... if an R134a A/C system says it takes 2.5 pounds of freon thats all that should be put it cause thats where it will work at its peak performance meaning BEST.... now you dont wanna add to much freon oil in the system ethier cause it can also make your system loose its cooling performance.... if ya inject a oil base dye into the system you should only put in 1 ounce but an oil base dye added to a system can help if there is a lack of oil in the system.... but there is always a chance of over filling a system with oil and freon.... the best way to have the system serviced cause of a noise issue.... have the vehicle taken to a shop that do a A/C flush and have the dryer replaced, compressor drained of its oil to see if there are any metal particles in the oil and replace what other parts are needed and fill with oil and vacuumed down to get any air out and to be refilled with freon...

the air comes out of the deforst vents and the bottom vents and not the front vents anymore,
What happen to the flow of air out of the front vents?

" Wrong. The high side port is the FURTHEST from the compressor, because it's downstream from the compressor output. You should never add anything to the high side. The low side is closest to the compressor intake, and is the only port through which anything should be added. And adding oil blindly is a bad idea, as is refrigerant. And you're wrong about different behavior with R12 and R134a - they behave the same if overcharged. And he said his truck is a 2001, so it does NOT have R12. Your lack of knowledge on this is scary.
Most likely his compressor is wearing out and should be replaced.

Mine did this and the AC clutch froze up on the truck. I ended up bypassing the AC with a shorter serpentine belt since at the time, it wasn't ( and still hasn't ) a priority to fix.
