Subject: Which roller rocker kit? IP: Logged
Message: I've never had any formal mechanic training. I am
totally self taught. My Dakota is a 1993 4x4 Club Cab
3.9L. Here is a list of some of the jobs I have done
myself:
Intake gaskets
New Double roller timing chain/pulleys/tensioner
Water pump
Added Trans cooler
Removed engine driven fan and installed Intrepid
cooling fans
etc.
Anyways, I would like to install roller rockers next. I
have decided on the 1.7 ratio Crower Roller Rockers.
On the v8performance.com website, you can order just
the roller rockers or a kit conataining the roller rockers
and guide plates, rocker studs, & 1pc. pushrod.
I have no doubt I can install them myself. Do I need just
the roller rockers or do I need the kit with guide plates,
rocker studs, and 1 piece pushrod?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: I think for most applications just the rockers is sufficient...however, if you're planning on revving it pretty high or if you've got a lot of internal work, you should go with the full kit.
I'm not positive on that...but I'm sure someone else will prolly chime in with a more helpful answer.

Message: I started with just the roller Rockers and after reving to high and bending a valve, I added the guide plates and longer pushrods. I Should have done that in the first place. Would have saved me pulling my heads off and getting a valve job done. But like most of us self taught Mechs, we live and learn.

Message: Hmmm, wonder why the valve bent? What benefit do the guide plates and pushrods add that the OEM doesn't have?

Message: The crower kit comes with rockers studs and spacer
washer
You will need to adjust them 3/4 turn from 0 lash
and also knock the baffle in the valve cover back
to clear the lock nuts
They are guided by washers on the roller tip using
the valve for guide if not adjusted right they
can jump over the valve and cause major damage
only good for 5500rpm
The rev kit eliminates the washers on the tip and
uses guide plates to align the rocker 8000rpm
The harland sharpe need no adjusting or baffle
mod to the cover and for the average guy a better
way to go just bolt them in asligned by a big
dowel pin between the rockers 8000rpm
If you don't know how to set the crowers don't
use them or get a good mech to install them each
cyl at TDC 3/4 turn from 0 lash
