Subject: Which muffler? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I got a 93 3.9 with a 3inch single pipe into a dual 2 1/2 inch outlet muffler all the way to the back. Recently one of the outlet pipes is almost burned off and it's time to search for a new muffler. The one I had on it made my truck sound like it has some serious nut to it, however it's too loud. I'm lookin for something a little quieter but still has the grunt to it when you get on the gas. Got any suggestions? Thanks.

Message: I installed a dynomax superturbo muffler on my 99 3.9L dak last year...nice and throaty without the obnoxious crackling. It doesn't sound ricey and it hasn't robbed any of my low end torque.

Message: I just got back from the muffler shop and had a flowmaster 40 series installed on my truck. I'm pretty happy with the sound. Isnt any quiter and I lost a lot of horse overall. Mainly low end and mid range though. I'm kinda pi$$ed now. There goes over 100 bucks!

Message: yea, should've ran 2.5"
Flowmaster 40 series sounds good if you like extremely loud. Not much can drone the sound out

Message: yeah you cant run anything bigger then 2.5 on the exhaust for the 3.9 engines unless you got some good amount of internal work done to it... those 3.9's need some back pressure to create its low end torque and power....

Message: Hmm.... Well, I guess now I know.LOL. I'd hate to replace this flowmaster. I already invested enough. Got any ideas to put a little extra back pressure in it? Thanks.

Message: can try reducing the size at the tail pipes
there's also a little trick we use on the harleys
for the guys that run open pipes,
do you have a welder or can you have someone do a little welding for you?

Message: I know somebody that does welding. Also does anyone think it would hurt anything if I replaced the 3 inch pipe with a 2 1/2 and put a short 3inch piece right before the muffler. It would be much cheaper but I dont know if that would help?

Message: I installed a Flowmaster on the ol 3.9. Allowed me to get the same MPG 10 miles faster. No differance at low speeds. I've grown to hate the harmonic noise inside the cab.
What did make a huge improvement was Gibson Headers. Way more power around 2,000 RPM, where this engine lives.
