I have almost 50K on my 3.9 4x4 Dakota. Probably about 20K ago I noticed that when it rained really bad out, the truck would run really rough until it was warmed up completely. It would also misfire under load. I thought right away to change plugs, wires, cap and rotor, but I thought it may have been a little early for a full on tuneup considering the manual says 60k. Anybody noticed this before? I'm concerned that I'll do a premature tune up and I'll still have a misfiring truck. Any advice or past experience would be appreicated. FYI - it doesn't seem as if it has got any worse in the past 20k miles - which is why I haven't acted on it. Oh yeah, my check engine light is on too, but they did not happen simulataneously so I just figured that it had misfired enough to set it off. I haven't had anything checked as of yet and/or don't even know if the two are realated. Thanks in advance.

You should go to your local autozone, They'll scan that Check engine light for you for free, which may help...
It sounds as if moisture is getting in somewhere it shouldnt be... There could be lots of reasons... I'm not an expert, but I've seen this alot before, You should follow all 6 of your plug wires, checking for places where they may have rubbed or worn, where moisture could be getting into the wires... Moisture could also be getting under the cap, which would cause the misfire, also. I did a tune up on my lifted 87 suburban, and after I did the distributor cap, it always ran rough in the rain, and I found that I didn't use that stuff they sell you with the cap that is made to keep moisture out.
If you have an autozone around, get the light scanned and see what that tells you, otherwise check over the wires, etc.

you can check codes yourself with the key on/off trick. i've done it on my bro-in-law's '02 SXT.
key on/off/on/off/on and the odometer will display codes then Pdone.
you probably need that tune-up. my manual for my '00 says 30k for plugs.
