Lately I have been having some idle problems with my 89' Dakota. Its a V6 3.9L 4WD 1989 with 190K. I am looking into whats causing it to idle funny. It intermittenly will drag down the RPMs and or cough at speeds less than 45 MPH. At less than 1750 RPMs and 20 MPH it will much likely die IF it decides to act up at that given moment.

So far I gather that it is either the Automatic Idle Speed motor, or the components that the on-board computer monitors to adjust the Automatic Idle Speed motor. They being TPS,Distance sensor, Coolant Temperature sensor and Neutral and Brake switches. So, before replacing the relating parts to the AIS motor, has any one had any experience with the DRBII device? Specifically with it being used with a 1989 Dakota as opposed to the 1996 models? My 89' has a system where I turn the key five times and it reads me the code without a DRBII. But I have done that and need a device that can hook up to a 1989 Dakota to function in ATM(Actuation Test Mode ). This mode would allow me to test parts of the component system individually and identify the defective piece that is operating improperly.
If anybody has any info on this device I am talking about let me know. And which models functions in others mode as well. ( ATM, sensor test mode, and engine running test mode )

PS. This device sounds too good to be true, wondering what others think, and what a 1989 Dakota owner has as options to using such a device. Thanks.

I looked at getting the actron superscanner. I emailed actron tech support and they told me the scanner will test the emissions sensors only. MSRP is $399. I think I read in the manual that it does an idle test, probably just the IAC. Check them out and send actron any questions you may have. I emailed them in the morning one week day and got a response back in a couple of hours.

I didn't think to email them about the ATM mode.

I recently traded in my 1995 dak that i was looking at the scanner for and got a 2002 dak.

Thanks for the info on actron. I checked out their site. Looks pretty minimal but still a good option for some, the scanner that is. I looked for used DRBs and found that they cost something like $5000 and only a 'dealer' or mechanic shop can buy them direct. Otherwise, they had some on auction from old dealership shops, but they had already been sold. Price unknown. Seems like a lot of work compared to just checking up on a computer scanner, trial and error that is.

Anyways, no need for a scanner for your new Dakota, Dan M? Or still thinking about buying a one? I mean, looking at purchasing another pick-up truck, but not sure to go with another Dakota. At least not a V6, I would have to go with the V8. I could be wrong, but heard that they get the same or close to MPGs.

I am still on my first tank of gas. I bought the truck late monday night and took it back tuesday for a detail and fill up. It's a 2002 quad cab 4x4 4.7L V8 auto. I traded in a 1995 club cab 4x4 auto 3.9 V6. In the 95 I got 17-18 MPG combined. I am about 200 miles on half tank in the 2002 QC. The QC has a 24 gallon tank. 200/12 = 16.6 MPG. I am close to the 17-18mpg the 95 got. The orignial ownre of the vehicle left me the original price tag from the window. It has alot of options that are bonus for me. About the only options it does not have are skid plates and leather and upgraded gears (has 3.55 with antispin diff).

Also I have been trying my hardest (not so easy) to keep a soft right foot. I've been doing some nice soft accelerations and obeying the speed limit (5 over on highway).

I was going to get that actron because it came with the cabling that would fit my 95 which was pre obdII. I have been thinking of just getting a superchips tuner or something instead.

One to two miles difference on the MPGs isn't that bad, IMO. Maybe there is something you could do to increase MPGs to 17-18. I think then the V8 would be the choice to go with. Either way the V6 is still a solid truck. 190K, 17 years 'new,' many new parts, rebuild tranny, and still happy. Not a 'bad' truck to work on either. *gonna look into the superchip and tuner*

I think I am getting that high of milage since I drive alot of the highway. 17 miles of my 23 miles commute each way is highway.

I am looking at installing a k&N filter/fipk, exhaust, superchips to modify settings as needed.

I really like the rails and the lack of storage inside is leaning me towards a toolbox instead of a bed cover. I have found some that will fit in the back and not have to sit on the sides of the bed.

I really loved the 1995, first "new" truck I bought. And it was very reliable, I did want to keep it but got a good trade in.
