Hey yall! i just tried to post this but maybe it didnt work. Anyway, i cannot get my 1990 3.9 Dodge Dakota to turn over. When i try to get it to, it just clicks like the battery is dead, which the battery is new, works my other truck i have so i know that cant be true. I doubt that its fuel related, like a couple of people have told me. Maybe i need some new battery cables (they still look new)or a selenoid?. Or just maybe has my alternator gone bad?

Any help I would be grateful for.

thanks again
Will

have you checked out the starting system (starter, relays)? the alternator is for keeping the battery charged, the battery is for starting the vehicle.

If the brushes are worn in the starter an old trick we used to use on GM trucks was to crawl under and gently bang on the starter motor with a lug wrench. It some times would get the starter to work

sounds like your starter. Many starters have replaceable contacts. If it is "clicking" then the solinoid is working, however the contacts that the solinoid engages might be dirty. Pull the unit and inspect the contacts. Generally you can freshen up the contacts with emery cloth or a fine file. But your parts store should be able to get the contacts. If your not comfortable working on the starter yourself, then take the starter to a auto electric shop. Or just pop for a new / reman starter.

If it ain't broke, your not trying!

Take some sand paper to your battery terminals. Then tighten them down real tight.

That fixed it when it happened to me the 1st time.

2nd time:

I have a viper alarm system that disables the starter each time. Don't wash your keys or your FOB won't work...replaced the battery and fixed it.

3rd time

I had replaced my altenator and didn't tighten it up flush/right. You can try loosening it up and then re torqing it down on both top & bottom.

That was all on a 2002 dakota. I think your problem is more than likely you didn't tighten the battery terminals.

Your altenator won't be bad, your truck should start even if it was bad. Just the battery would die. If you've pulled the battery out and used it in your other truck then obviously the altenator didn't drain the battery .

On my 3rd answer, I meant my starter. Not my altenator

ok, i had a guy come and look at it, didnt charge me a thing, the only thing wrong with it is the Starter Selenoid. I just did research and the selenoid goes for $99.00? is that right, i mean jezze, i bought a selenoid for the ole ford and it only costed me 7 bucks. I can only hope when i go down to fishers, they dont tell me thats true. I would have to go take out a loan or something, being only 17 and working part-time.
