Message: Yes, the MIL light did occasionally come on while driving. Most of the time it would go off a short time later while still driving. The rest of the time it would go off when I would turn the truck off. I could never use the key on/key off sequence to pull the codes as none were ever saved.
I took it to a shop who used a scanner (snap on I think) to pull the codes, none were saved. I could never get to the shop to have them scan for codes when the MIL light was still on. I have no clue what trigged the light to come on.
I will email you some docs on how to test the EGR using a vacuum tester.
If you need a new EGR, I got mine (borg warner) from Pepboys. It was $64.99, cheaper than autozone ($74+),advance ($84+) or napa($100+). It was only $10 cheaper but pepboys had one in stock and I would have to order it from autozone.

Message: My 98 dakota v6 did stumle on acceleration, I found out that wires from distributor to plugs were not in correct order .(i.e. #1 was going to some other cylinder). I put a new napa distributor cap and put new wires in correct order. truck run lot smoother has not stumbled yet. See chiltons manual for ditributor cap and cylinder numbering for wires

Message: I have not checked that out. The cat was installed last year. I also installed a new oxygen sensor last year (my truck only has 1 upstream of the cat).
I was reading more on alldata and was going to test the oxygen sensor.
I'm going to do another vacuum test as well, I think my next project is to replace ALL of the vacuum lines.

Message: I am not sure what you mean by EGR pump. The egr on my truck is a 2 piece with a controller where the electrical connection plugs in as well as the vacuum. The other piece is the valve itself that bolts to the manifold in back left next to the oil sending until.
It may by my distributer or injector. I am not sure since I can't reproduce the backfiring while at idle.

Message: I already replaced the TPS once, but decided to test it again since my problems still occur. Output voltage on the new TPS was not consistant so I replaced it under warranty. The new one has consitant output voltage.
I found another problem. Everything I have read about MAP sensors say the output voltage should be higher with throttle plate closed than with it open. I found a reference to other chrystler products saying the output should be between 4-5 volts with the throttle plate closed (engine off, ignition on). Mine is < 2 volts.
I'm going to check it again tomorrow to make sure there was not a problem with my jumper wire nor DMM as it did stop responding (ie 0 results displayed), I replaced the battery in it and it is working again. Not sure what happened there as the old battery tested at 8.4 volts. I have a less functional DMM that tests higher for most all tests (ohm, volt, etc) compared to my more functional DMM.

Message: Have you tried some Methyl Hydrate
( gas line antifreeze ) -possible water in gas
causing the problem ??
Also possible = injector either staying open
or plugged up !
Have you put any injector cleaner in lately ?
Bear in mind that the backfire is caused by
unburnt fuel - which may have been too rich to
fully burn , or too lean to ignite in the cylinder

Message: I went to radio shack and picked up some small insulated alligator clips. I used them to make some small jumpers to test the MAP sensor.
I used them to check the MAP sensor output voltage several times. It tested good with ignition on/engine off (4. something volt, can't remember exact number) but dropped too low with engine on @ idle (around 1.5V as i recall). Everything I have read indicated ~1-2V drop.
I also moved my truck out of the garage and put my wife's car back in. When I went to pull my truck up, it started fine, then stalled. Repeated several times. I gave it gas, ran fine. After a few times of doing this ,finally ran log enough for me to move it up.
MIL light never came on but I checked for codes anyway. Finally! stored codes! got code 14..MAP voltage low (< .16V) or too high (>4.96 V).

Message: Replaced map sensor today. Noticed while driving that the RPM needle still flucturates sometimes while driving at slow speeds.
I will occasionally have a very rough idle. It is so bad that the entire truck shakes and is noticable if you stand outside and watch it. If i step on the brake and give it a little gas, it runs fine.
Truck did hesitate as i was getting on an onramp for the highway. It also backfired once at slow acceleration again.
Next step is to replace the IAC and if that fails, to take the truck in to a shop to get it scanned.
I think my christmas present to myself will be an actron scanner.

I know OBD1 is more limited than OBD2, so is it worth a scanner for OBD1?

There are scanners and code readers. The key on/key off sequence is just for reading codes. I am going to get a scanner. With a scanner you can read live engine data including output from sensors. Pretty much most everything is ran though the PCM so by monitoring the PCM input/outputs you can troubleshoot problems better. Parts failing do not always set a trouble code.
I'm looking at the actron superscanner 9150. It includes their scanner that can read OBDII as well as pre OBDII GM/Chrysler/Ford vehicles. The advantage of this over their other products is that it includes the cables to read those older vehicles (with the exception of 2 - chryler LH and Ford MECS - you can buy these 2 cables separately). I checked their online documention and the kit comes with the cable to read my 95.
One of the tests it does is an idle test. This would be very handy. Looking over alldatadiy there's alot of tests that require a scanner to complete.

I spoke to a guy at advance when I ordered the MAP sensor. He said he does mechanic work on the side and ordered this scanner (they dont stock it) and is going to charge $60 for scanning a vehicle. Not a bad idea and I may even do something similar. He said they sell alot of actron gear and he has not seen any of it come back.
website said retail is $399.99. You can find retailers selling it for less than that online.

Message: Let me guess. It's hard to start in the cold weather cuase you got to give it gas to keep it running. It sound like a popping coming from the intake out the TB. And you have to play with the gas pedal to keep it running becuase of the missfiring right? And everytime it starts running smooth it backfires spuraticaly and stalls. It's the distributor gear and bushing worn out and cracked probably. It's about 60 bucks. Dont be like me and spend over a grand before you figure it out. It's worth a try.
