i think it gets close to 20mpg city and 25mpg highway.
i think its a good motor because it came form DC and you don't hear to many problems with there motors.

Message: I have on in my 2004 quad cab 210hp @5200, 235lb torque@ 4000, I get about 18 city 22- 25 highway depending on speed and traffic. I have a K&N dropin and a Jet Chip. I have also pulled a 4000lb travel trailer with it with no prob.
One more thing I don't know if it because im used to a 89 probe w/a 4 banger but this V-6 is a very peppy engine

Message: Its a good engine however I would recommend getting the 3.92 rear end if possible. I currently have 37k on my 04 3.7 5sp with no engine problems as of yet. Im hoping to put 4.10s in it this fall/winter but I havent decided if im going to try my luck and do it myself (only way to learn) or pay to have it done.

Message: 18mpg in the city??? and 22-25 on the highway! My last tank driving a mix of city and highway yielded 13.5mpg. That was me driving extremely conservative in my acceleration and holding a steady speed for as long as I could. I love my truck but it's gas mileage is garbage. I have the K&N drop in and have accepted when I bought a truck that my mileage would be low, but not this low with a 6 cyl. Still looking for ways to up the mileage.

Message: SDD, if your mpg is that bad with a 3.7 I'd seriously consider the possibility that something is wrong or out of spec. A <2 year old OHC V6 shouldn't be doing that badly.

Message: I have an 05' CC auto. One of the problems with some of the city driving I do is that when I take my son to school, it's only about 7 miles, but there are about 10 stoplights in that distance and I am constantly in stop and go driving back and forth. I am going to be taking a long drive (about 700 miles, almost completely highway) and I will see what I can get doing a highway drive instead of mixing short stop and go trips in with my highway driving. It' rare when I hear anyone getting good gas mileage with a Dakota, but I hear quite a few complaints about getting poor mileage, so I will let this trip give me something to really gauge it's mileage on. If it's still bad on this trip, then I will talk to two mechanics, one Dodge and one non-Dodge. Thanks for the responses.

Message: I have owned a 3.9 96 4x4 CC for the past 6 years. While the mileage was never stellar it was not awful either. This past easter work bought me an 05 Dakota with the 3.7l. While the motor will pull weight ok, 3000lbs boat, the mileage is awful in city traffic. I'd say close to 13mpg at best. I am also very disappointed in the 05 Dak, I refer to is as a Caravan with a box not a truck. The tranny is weak at best and the 4x4 is so low. I have since gotten rid of the 05 and now have a 2000. I like it much better. PS my 2000 has the 3.9L again. If I had my own choice I'd go to a 4.7l.

Message: after reading the post i now know why the 2006 dakota I bought was what seemed to be a real deal.It is a 3.7 2006 auto and had 123 miles on it.I bought it in june of 2007. it came with a factory class IV hitch towing package, none slip rear end, 17" tires and is a 2 wheel drive. To me it up shifts to slow and down shifts 2 quick which keeps my engine rev-ed above 2000.dodge people said they could not rechip it because govt wants engines to run fast to burn all the fuel.mpg now is about 16 in town up n down a mtn and maybe a 19 if i can run 75and get rpm's at 2000. u got any ideas????

your dealer actually told you this? LOL i'd find another dealer. they are feeding you a line of crap.
try changing all the fluids, trans oil, engine oil and rear diff oil to sunthetics. check tire inflation and alignment. since your truck is so new your mileage may go up a little after the engine is broken in.
if your '06 is a Quad Cab it probably weighs about 500#'w more than my '00 QC. mine is a 3.9 V6 w/ 5spd manual and i have got as high as 23.5 mpg onm the highway. usually combined mileage is about 20 mpg.
don't spen your money on a CAI it won't help your mileage.

Message: ok daddio, i hope i spelled that right. i will start changing all my fluids to synthetics when they are due for changes. i now have approx 3750 miles on it and figure it will get better. the only other dodge i ever owned was way back with the slant 6. should i drive the hades outta it to break it in for hard running or gently.in my past i always drove them from the get go just as i would in years to come and seemed to work well. i am game to do what i have to do and patience is also allowable. right now i am using5/20 pennsoil synthentic. all advice is appreciated, i do love that truck.

Message: i've always driven my vehicles the same if they were new or had 150k miles. my philosophy is "if you baby it when it's new it will always be a baby". if you take care of them they'll take care of you. the 3.7 is unproven but so was it's big brother the 4.7 v8 and a lot of guys here with the 4.7 love it.
5/20 oil seems kinda light unless you are in the great white north. i think the manual calls for 5w-30.

Message: ok ty daddio..i think mine is what they call a quad cab,, the back doors open after you open the frt doors. i looked at book price and i bought the truck cheap i think but i am new to dodge after 30 years of owning one.
i had the jiffy lube put in the oil.. it probably was 5-W-30 syn. but next change will be 5 w 30 for sure. i live in chattanooga tn and will slip my dodge over to another dealer and see what they say about that chip.crap if i could get my hands on one, I'd stick it in myself.but better miles or not, i still love it.
oh! you dont think splitting the exhaust to a dual exh will help ???
