Is $625 to replace a leaking timing chain cover seal overpriced? i figured the whole timing chain would be less.

thats including labor?

I would think thats a little high

gotta take off the serpentine belt
radiator fan
the shroud
alternator, ac
then the accessory bracket
then water pump
crank pulley
harmonic damper
then the timing cover.

also a radiator flush since you have to drain it anyway.
a oil change or 2 also if you get coolant in the oil( a change anyway but maybe more than one if coolant is present)

chances are its just the seal around the cover and not the cover itself

you mentioned the timing chain,
was/is that really loose and making a bunch of noise?
cause that will beat the heck out of the cover and crack it.

64 bucks for the chain and gears.
14 for the gasket on the timing chain cover
12 for the waterpump gasket.

dont know what the cover runs I would guess 80 bucks?

those numbers might be off by a dollar or 2 been a couple of months since I did one.

They just told me that it was the timing chain cover seal. They did not say anything about replacing the timing chain, tensioner, etc... I only bought the truck a month ago so I basically told them I need to talk to someone and they put me off until tomorrow. Maybe they did plan on doing the chain and tensioner as well but I was under the impression that they were just going to take it apart, replace the seal, and put it back together.

thats crooked mechanics there if your assumption was right.

if they are replacing the water pump, bypass hose and lower and upper radiator hose.
the front seal, the timing chain cover the chain and gears and all the seals inturn then that might be a decent price but still on the high side.

When I called the dealer about replacing my timing chain, which is essentially the same job. They quoted me $900. What year model is your truck? If it is before a 97 it will be worth replacing the chain and adding the famous tensioner.

My truck is a 1998 Club Cab Sport.I've been playing phone tag with them so far today so I'm unsure what they plan on doing.
