 Subject: 92 v-6 intermittent missing

Ive got a 92 V-6 that had a code 15....speed sensor..replaced the sensor,and it ran great,NOW its bucking and has quit twice...it acted like it was the speed sensor,but tested it,and it seems to be fine...the check enging light never came on,and had to do the key thing three times to retrieve the code...Last time It quit it wouldnt crank back up,raised the hood,and jiggled all the harnesses,and it fired right up..sounds like a harness problem now...any ideas???? please reply to N5926G@bellsouth.net..this truck runs great when its running,just has become very un-relaible

Check your crank position sensor. I got a code 15 when my cps was going out, and finally got a code 11 when it got really bad. Had the same symptoms as yours.

Thanks for the reply...got any ideas as to how to check this sensor?I have the haynes manual,and will see if there is a procedure for checking it.It however did not have the procedure for checking the Speed sensor..had to find that on the web....

My 92 Dakota started acting up at 200K miles. It would intermittently stumble, backfire, and die. Changed a slew of parts, and it just kept getting worse. Then I changed the distributor drive gear and shaft. Part cost $65 from my 5-star, and was easy to change. The truck runs great now.

Thanks for the input,going to replace the crankshaft position sensor as Rick suggested...did some checking today,and the book does not show a code for the Crankshaft sensor.Since this is OBD1,there are evidently a bunch of things that will not set a code..just unloaded a Cadillac Catera,that was an absolute nightmare..lost my butt on it,but at least its someone elses problem..after replacing the c/s sensor Ill look into your fix if the problem persists.....Thanks again

89-96 has a splice in the wiring harness from the under hood fuse box that controls fuel pump, computer and ignition. find that, solder it and tape the harness back up, problem fixed. the splice is about 8 inches or so down from the fuse block.

And again some great advice..the truck has 136000 on it,it was a 1 owner vehicle,and obviously had some issues for the former owner,the computer has been replaced,and there are(were) a number of stripped places in the harness,mainly the wire pair going to the coil...also I can see that he had major ignition.or fuel issues,as the muffler is creased in the center from likely major backfiring in the past...major carbon in the exhaust system..have replaced the o2 sensor,and speed sensor,c/s position sensor on the way,lastly have noticed sounds like minor backfiring during downshift.....

It is the one under the hood. power distribution and relay box. about 8 inches back toward the cab in the wiring loom. If it is bad you will find green corosion when you take the tape off or a loose conection.
