Message: i need to know what type tranny my dak has, 88 3.9L 2wd auto. i need to change the fluid and filter because it's getting dark brown color but i don't know what kind it is. i know i need atf + 3 or 4 for the fluid but other then that i'm lost. also what would cause it to shift wrong, 1 to 2 is normal, 2 to 3 i have to rev it up to about 45 mhp before it'll shift then when it does it's hard and feels like it'll rip itself out of the truck. as far as overdrive i have no idea, can't feel it shift after it's in 3 and exhaust noise doesn't change either like it would if it shifts into od. any help is appreciated.

ATF+3 will work
the +4 was designed for the newer tranny slip issues.

Message: A500, thanks i'll make a note of that. hopefully the tranny won't need a rebuild. i noticed i can make it shift normaly if i move the lever from 1 to 2 to D, if i put it in drive and start from a stop then i have to rev it up before it'll shift to 3. maybe the TV cable thing needs adjusted? not sure how to but if i look around at other posts maybe i'll find an answer.

Message: first i'd change all (and i mean all, not just whats in the pan) the fluid and filter, then see how she acts.
brown tranny fluid is not good.

Message: got her changed and flushed, pretty sure all old fluid was removed including converter. some sludge on the magnet and a few small metal shavings but not very much. working better but still not shifing 2-3 normaly and as far as overdrive i can't tell if it locks up or not. i looked and there is no TV cable, instead there is a metal rod with a bolt on the tranny for adjusting but i have no idea how to properly adjust that. i found some on adjusting a cable but nothing on a rod. also how do you adjust the bands, i know one is on the outside and the other is inside. thanks

Message: on the 88 it's not a cable but a rod as you see. It still connects to the throttle body and can be adjusted, how? i do not know yet as i have not fudged with mine at all.

Message: down under the truck on the rod is a slide adjustment, spray some wd40 on this, wait a few min.and loosen the bolt on the adjustment, hold the rod forward and slide the adjustment back on the rod[towards back of truck]try 1/4 to 1/2 in. and you should notice a difference in the shift points now,to much and it will not shift to a higher speed
but it sounds like the bands need adjustment,
one band adjustment is out side the trans by the shifting linkage, the other is in side, the pan needs to be removed, both are set to 72in.pounds,
this should have been done when the trans was flushed.
if i remember right 2-3 is the outside adjustment
good luck
