Message: What kind of motor? and is this an automatic or a standard? if you say an auto and a 3.9L join the club man all of us with 3.9L V6's are all having the same problem with ours, you just have to mod the sh!t out of it to get more power, do a search for mods and you will see what you can do to it for more power.
My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

Message: I think doing the TV cable adjustment and modifying the TPS sensor may be able to help you there.
Both can be found here:
http://blackshire-server.bounceme.net/OhioDakotas/pdf/Speedtweaks%20Tips%20And%20Tricks.pdf
The TPS Mod is easy to find using the Bookmarks on the left-hand side...the TV Cable adjustment isn't in the bookmarks for some odd reason but it's right between the bookmarks titled "Will aftermarket parts void my warranty?" and "Alternative connections for your A/F meter."

Message: How can a transmission "kickdown" from a dead start? If it's not starting out in first you should have a tranny shop look at it.

I have a Ford Probe that does that when you select manual shift and try to take off in Drive.
I'm with Josh thinking maybe the TV cable. At least that's the first thing I would look at. Other things that would indicate the TVC would be the tranny not downshifting when depressing the gas pedal.

Message: The TV cable will not force a second gear start. The probable culprits are: Governor valve sticking, governor circuit electrical fault, valve body malfunction, front piston servo cocked in bore, or front band linkage malfunction. If your tranny is a newer one without bands, there's still plenty left to ponder in the other possible issues.
