Didnt relize the 3.9 orginated off the 360? I thought it was the 318, also it was first introduced to replace the "indestructable" 225 slant six.



Ah, the Iaccoca years, when two platforms formed the basis of an entire car line, and a new engine could always be created from an old one. Need a V-6? Chop off two cylinders from the venerable 318 - itself a modified 273! Thus, the 3.9, with a 3.91" bore, a close relative of our friend the 318 - with the same bore and stroke.

heck just do the math the 318 was aprox. just under 40 C.I.'s per cyl.
as is the 3.9 (239)

the 360 has aprox. 45 cubes per cyl
the v6 would have then been a 270

yes our motors share the block, bore and stroke with the 318, but i believe he might be partially correct. I think both the 360 and 318 came from the same small block design hence the 239 is from a 360 mindset.
