My check engine light came on, so they ran the code, and it came up that either I left the key on while filling, which i didn't. Or I need a new gas cap. Which I don't. Or I need a new Evap Silinoid. Anyways, They ordered one, but it has taken over two weeks and it is still not here. Will it hurt anything if i drive the truck?

i bet all that was wrong with it was the gas cap was loose, the dealer loves it when people come in with that problem "cha ching", i would just say stuff the dealer, buy a new gas cap just to be on the safe side and reset the pcm yourself! to reset the pcm just remove the negative batt terminal, then turn the key to the on position but do not start the truck and hold for 15-20 seconds, then turn the key off and reconnect the negative batt terminal, should take a few startes or instant but what ever code was stored will be gone off the dash, it will not harm the vehicle to drive with a code on, it is just annoying.

Uh...KJS...your description kinda sucked there.

How do you start a vehicle when the battery isn't connected? :)

To reset:
Disconnect neg. battery terminal...turn key to start position and hold for 30 seconds or so (not sure how long is NEEDED but I usually go 30+ secs to be safe). Then reconnect the terminal...start the truck and do NOT touch the gas. Let it idle a minute or two. Shut it off. Start it again and once again let it idle without touching the gas. Shut it off. Then you're free to start it and drive. The first two starts are to allow the computer to adjust the idle properly.

Oh...and driving with the check engine light on probably won't hurt it in this case...though i'd keep the driving to a minimum until you've solved the problem. I also agree with KJS...it probably was the gas cap unless you ruled it out by replacing it already.

you know you can reset the pcm without disconnecting the battery and losing all your radio presets. stand over the passenger side fender looking down at the pcm. disconnect the plug on the pcm that's closest to the firewall for about a minute or so. then plug it back. works every time.

Another way to reset the pcm is to just disconnect the negative battery terminal, wait ten mintues, and then reconnect. The pcm will automatically reset itself after a significant power interruption.

For the record: I was just goofing around with KJS...I don't have perfect grammar and I don't expect everyone else to either. My post towards KJS was all in good humor though.

no prob josh, but 8banger are you sure, i've heard from people that say they had the battery out of the truck for days fixing other things and then put it back in and still had the mil light come on and not go off until they reset the pcm the right way.

KJS,
Yes it works, I had to rest my pcm last month, I got the dummy light because i had a leak in the evap hose. Granted the light came back on again a few days later until I fixed the problem. I also had offroad exhaust on my previous car and would get the check engine light every couple weeks indicating an o2 sensor error. I simply disconnect the battery for about 10-15 minutes and it cleared it every time. Daddio is correct as well, you also just disconnect the power plug from the pcm at the box, it's the same effect. It loses its memory if the power is disrupted for a short period of time.

GB2000: I know you were just playing, I was LMAO when i read your post and i had to chime in. It's all good.

Dammit...got caught in my own game of sarcasm, huh? lol

KJS,
I've never heard that before...not saying it's never happened, but I too have heard that simply disconnecting the battery for a little while will do the trick. Who knows?
