My Dakota runs great around town but when I go for any extended drive(30 miles or so), it starts to miss, lurch, backfire, and ping really bad. After it sits and cools down for awhile, it runs great again. Mods: cold air intake(homemade), TPS adj.,3923 Autolites, 180 Thermostat, Dynomax, K&N drop-in. Around 100K on engine. It idles fine, but starts to miss at about 1500 to 2000 rpm when revved. It doesn't stall when driving or stopped, but misses, etc. Any ideas, Larry?

I'm not Larry, but I do have a couple of suggestions: It could that your intake manifold plenum gasket may be defective. Open up the Throttle body plates and look down into the manifold with a flash light, if you see oil accumulation, then that's your problem. A backfire and ping are 2 symptoms of this problem.

Another possibility, is the camshaft position sensor in the distributor. If it starts to go bad it can cause a backfire and missing.

Another possibility is a bad Throttle position sensor. The TPS is like a volume control on a radio, if it starts to go bad you can hear a scratchy or crackling noise in the speaker. That crackling can cause alot of the problems for the computer.

When was the last time you have had a tune up: new distributor cap, rotor, sparkplug wires and newe spark plugs. I had a Dakota that started missing real bad at 30,000 miles, it turned to be a bad spark plug wire.

Have you ever changed you O2 sensor? It should be changed at 60,000 miles.
