Subject: Quandry IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking for somebody with some solid background in TB's on the 238/3.9. I have a stock 46mm TB and installed a stock 52mm TB from 318/5.2. I notice a big difference in mid to top end power but a loss in low end. My question is will a reworked 46mm TB from another company work much better than the 52mm stock TB?
My mods are:
98 3.9 Auto,IAT Mod, TPS Mod, 180 TS,CS Mod, NGK Iridium BCPR6EGP, ASP pulleys, 1.7 RR's,Airaid In, Superchips performance prog, Elect fans, JBA Hdrs, Magnaflow muf, 52mm TB, MSD 6A, JBA wires, BW cap/rotor. Hotchkis TVS package, R/T rims w Kuhmo rubber, Powertrax locker.

Message: Here's the deal. The v8 tb is only 50mm at best unless it has extensively been reworked. The v6 manifold is only 47.5mm which means that it doesn't really matter how big the tb is. The manifold is the limiting factor.
Now here is the sticky point. The smaller diameter of the v6 manifold disrupts the smooth air flow of that v8 tb and makes it less effective than a properly sized, although smaller, tb.
To understand this concept, think of the manifold and tb as a single part. The bores in the manifold are simply an extention of the throttle bores. You wouldn't like to see an adrupt reduction of the diameters inside your tb, would you?
While not perfect, the v8 tb is not all that bad of a choice.

Message: Thanks for the replys. I realize the TB bores are larger than the Intake M. bores, I've designed a plate to go in between the V8 TB and the I.M. that would taper to the proper size. I'm just wondering if the reduced pressure inside the TB would affect the map reading as apposed to a properly sized TB? Wouldn't the larger bores reduce velocity/ air pressure affecting map readings?

Message: I have an 02 cc 3.9 w/ a 01 V8 TB on. I have had it for about two weeks and love it. I dont feel any lowend loss, and do feel a noticeable increase in mid and topend.
I do have the superchips tuner at the "Performance" level and am running 93 oct.
Dunno if that helps at all.... No engine light yet

Message: DEX:The airhat fits just fine and its a good idea to switch sensors if v6 TB is newer than v8 just for reliability purposes.
Does anybody else have any finite details about this question I have with the MAP sensor?

Message: Mine239, it is my understanding that the MAP(simplified a diaphram attached to a variable resistor/rheostat) sends it's output (input from the intake manifold vaccuum(vaccuum decreases as the RPMs increase)) to the PCM which in turn affects the amount of fuel and retard/advance timing. If your PCM has already had the "learning" time for the new airflow(200 miles), then it has probably reconfigured itself for the new MAP, TPS, and IAC readings as well. I don't know if this helped.
