Subject: Antifreeze leak

I am perplexed!! Last winter my heater core gave out and I bypassed it in front of the firewall (have 270,000 miles on it now). Two days ago the little rubber U-shaped hose I capped it with tore off near my home. I replaced the hose last night and clamped it down (and refilled the antifreeze). I started the truck and antifreeze started dripping out the bottom of the truck from an area beside where the transmission fluid pan is (from the driver's side). Where could that be coming from? What might be causing that? (It seems to be dripping from underneath a metal plate to the inside of the driver's side wheel well. What's under that?) ANY help is vastly appreciated!!!!

What year do you have? On my 98, there is not really a hose near the wheel well to get a leak from. Seems that you might have had some of the antifreeze get on something and puddle and now it is just dripping out. You might try spraying down the whole engine with water to get any old coolant out and see if that helps.

It is a 1999 Dakota. It only happens when the motor is running and then for several minutes after the motor is turned off until wherever the antifreeze is leaking from dries up. WHat kind of hose connections might be that far back inside the motor (on the underside of the truck)?

I wonder if you have a leaking freeze plug from the engine block, a leaking water pump or a blocked radiator causing a back-pressure in the system which will find a leak at a weak connection before the radiator.

sounds like a freeze plug somewhere. there a couple behind the flywheel. also on the sides of the block. you could get some dye and a blacklight to find the leak/leaks.

sure are. some are a real pain. if it's on the back of the block, you have to drop the tranny and remove the flexplate.

Same problem...I believe mine is coming from the small freeze plug right above the starter. Tell me if this is where you believe yours is leaking. I already replaced the freeze plug on the side of the engine block right next to the filter. $3.00 part messin my good truck up, wtf...

Mine has turned out to be a cracked hose. I started the motor and climbed under the truck with a flashlight. Found the leak, pulled off the hose, and found the crack. Happy no freeze plugs seem to be involved!!
