Subject: what transmissios wil fit? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know if a v6 transmission out of a magnum dakota (1992-1996) will fit in a pre-magnum v6 dakota (1988-1991)? Are the new ones completely computer controlled? If so, will they work on such an older truck? Will they bolt right up? What about the linkage? I wanted to know because I am shopping for an tranny and I needed to know if a newer one will fit without any problems. There isnt that many pre-mag transmissions out there and plenty from the newer ones. Thanks!

Message: no. mag trannys are more electrical i believe. im sure someone else will post more on that but im almost 100% sure that premag and mag are not compatable. mechanically they are but not electrically.

Message: Thanks so much jay and vern. I always liked this forum place. I will keep an eye out for an 1988 through 1994 transmission now. Its hard to find one with working OD. Thanks for the offer, it sounds very nice (since I have an 1989 3.9L RWD), but I live in Ohio and I dont think that we would be able to travel that far for a transmission.

Message: I hate to bring this post back, but I have another question. If I have an '89 with 3.9L RWD, and I get a 1992 through 1994 (or 1995), what will have to be modified for it to work on my truck? Vern, you say that the "88-94 are the same", do you mean mechanically and electronically? I think that the TV rod is replace with a cable, but we may be able to get it to work if that is the only thing different.
I found a database with used transmissions online. When I search for '89 4sp. v6 rwd, it comes up with transmissions from the years 1988 to 1991. A search for a 1992 (with same specs) only 1992 transmissions show up. Same with 1993. When I search for a 1994 (same specs), they pop up for 1994 and 1995.
What I am getting at is are these different transmissions compatable with my dakota? If so, what would I need to modify? Thank you so much!

Message: thats BS!!
these trans are ALL the same basics, there are slight differents, but nothing that can,t be easily over comed, change levers for TV cable, drill a hole for a crank sensor or change a sensor

Message: Thanks vern. I dont mean to take sides, but I have seen people like vern, Larry, and few others on here for a while. I know that they know dakotas (GenI and GenII) pretty well.
Vern, what did you mean by "change a sensor" in your last sentence? I thought that the ONLY thing different between the '88 to '91's and the '92 to '94's (or '95) was the difference in TV cables/rods. Is this true? I have a spare TV linkage arm for the TV rod, so I should be set for any tranny from '88 to '94, right? My '89 doesn't use a crank position sensor, so I can ignore the hole/notch. When was the transmissions in dakotas dirst computer controlled for all shifting? I know in these GenI daks that the computer controls the OD and TC lockup solenoids, but thats pretty much it.

Message: what i met by change sensor was it may have a different plug end on 1 trans and a different 1 on another
96 i,m sure the computer controls shift,
maybe 95
thats right on the TV cable

Message: it would be easier all around to just get the right tranny for your truck, and not mess with changing sh!t from a newer one. yes they are mostly the same, but on 93 the computer controls overdrive. so, on a older truck, you wouldnt have it unless you modified it. and why do that. its not like you HAVE TO put a newer one in it. it would most likely be cheaper for a older one anyway. putting a newer one in an older truck would be like running up hill.

Message: Thanks for replying. I just wanted to say that the reason that I was looking to see if a newer transmission would fit is beacause I am having troubles at this time finding one that is for my truck (the correct year). We have gone through plenty of these transmissions recently, none working, and we wouldnt mind if we modified a newer one a little to fit. We gone through one that appeared to have come from a '92 or newer magnum truck (because of the hole on the bell housing for a crank position sensor -it even had the old U-shaped rubber grommit) and it fit just fine, but the thing was messed up. We are tired of guessing which tranny will work right now since one junkyard screwed us. We looked through listings of trannys in Ohio and there is 3 listed that are the correct year for my truck and a crapload of them for 1992-1994!
We can modify the TV and change the connector to fit the plug for the OD or the distance sensor -no problem. I know for a fact that all the transmissions had only a switch (for the reverse light or neutral), one sensor (the distance/speed sensor) and one connector for a pack of solenoids (OD and torque converter lockup). What more is there? On these older trucks, the computer controls the OD, too. It uses readings from the coolant temperature sensor, the engine speed sensor, the distance sensor on the rear of the tranny, and the throttle posision sensor to decide if to switch into OD and TC lockup or not.
Great thing about these newer ones is that although some are very bad and may not work, there are several that do that have low mileage. That sounds nice since when we shop for a tranny, the guy behind the counter knows nothing about the it except that "it wil fit in my truck". I guess that you have to believe them, but it is dissapointing to find after you put the thing on the truck and put new fluid and a filter on that it doesnt shift into gear correctly or shift at all. All I want is something dependable put in ther so I can get on my way. I dont want to sound like I am arguing or fighting anyone, I am just making a statement.

Message: i,m not going to argue with jay on the ez of that or cost,
but i,ll say this don,t go off of what the Hollander exchange book says what fits what,
thats what most junk-yards use to say what fits what and it is,nt always right,
i,ve put in two different transfer cases,
1 from a 87dak into a 91dak the book says these don,t exchange
also a 93dak transfer into a 89dak and they said this don,t exchange
my point is this if its not a direct fit they tell you it won,t work, when a simple change [levers,sensor,plug-in etc]and it will work
bottom line check out the trans you are getting to see if everything looks the same[if you can take stuff off your trans and put on to work
good luck

Message: Thank you so much, Vern. You have beed so helpful. We are still shopping, but now for a 1989 to 1994 tranny. Now I can find one with less mileage that may be designed better than the very first one (from 1988). They may be in better shape, too (I hope). As long as it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, then OD, I would be very happy. Thanks again!

Message: Thanks Vern, Jay, and Gen1dak. You have been of great help to me. We went to a small junkyard in Columbus, Ohio and they had a 1993 4-speed that was rebuilt a year ago. The truck it came from was driving on the highway near by when the engine blew. It was towed there and carefully taken apart. They only wanted $200 for this one (very nice being rebuilt). The owner of the place said that he wanted to keep a good reputation. We put that transmission in the truck Sunday evening, and it ran PERFECT! It shifts smoothly and everything. All I had to do to get it to work with my GenI Dakota (mine's an '89) was change the TV arm and the distance sensor from the original, or core tranny and the rest bolted right up and plugged in. I had to bend my TV rod a little because of the way the arm is.To make it easy on us, we had already removed the y-pipe after we cut out the catalytic converter to replace with a straight pipe. I couldnt be any more happier. I can accidently speed now. I am not used to the way this thing runs. I have to be careful now. Before, without o/d, I could go 65mph, but my tach would say 3800rpms. Now I catch myself going 75mph at 3200rpms. I dont have to press the gas as hard anymore. I am sure that my mpg went up. I need to check it. I am glad this is over with now. It was screwwed up since November. I guess that you can spread the word that a 1992 to 1994 (or 95?) transmission will fit in these older GenI dakotas with little modification! Another success story, I guess. Anyways, thanks again!!!
