Message: LOTS!
The nonMag is either carb'ed or TBI'ed, neither of which is as efficient as MPI.
The heads on a nonMag flow way less (in stock form) than Mags.
The Mag is controlled by a fairly complex PCM (the brains).
The exaust manifolds flow way better than a stock nonmag's
The cam uses a roller tappet, no more need be said bout that.
In short, its almost a whole different design that utilizes a lot of good principles for efficient power production however its about to be replaced (the Mag that is) by the latest in overhead technology.
Good luck and I hope that helps, Scott

Message: Trans should be no problem but be ready for a wiring nightmare, alot will have to be switched and adapted. You will basically need the whole underhood wiring harness from the Mag donor truck.
Honestly, if your gonna do all that you should think of a V8, just a little more money and alot more power.
What year is your Dak?

Message: blackdak... just because it's getting kinda old, i did a little math for you... you complain about the 3.9 but it does better than the 4.3
if you look at the size of the motor the 3.9 makes more horsepower per liter than the 4.3
3.9 = 44.87 horsepower per liter
4.3 = 44.18 horsepower per liter

175 HP/239 ci = 00.7322 horsepower per liter... i knew there was another reason i didn't do ci's!
bernd? how many liters/cubic inches is a 3.9 with only 5 pistons? OUCH!

If so, how much more power could I get if I were to rebuild my motor and shave the head and port out the intake manifold and replace the cam with a better one? Thanks

Message: Brandon, check old posts, probably from a month ago or less, I listed a few old Mopar Performance part #'s for nonMag 3.9's. it was cam, heads, and intake.
Everybodys got different takes on it but this is what I would do if I were you. If your emission is strick where you are this may not be a good idea.
I would try all Mopar Parts dealers and see if they have any old MP parts laying around fro the preMag 6 as none of the part #'s I listed are in a current price list.
then I would have the heads worked by KRC.
Only if you were able to get the 4bbl intake from MP then youcould run a small 4bbl like a 500 or 390 (if there still made).
Then put 1.6 roller rockers on it, you should be able to use V8 ones if there not listed for 3.9 (you will have to modify the shaft a little).
Then get good TRW or a forged piston and throw NOS to its @ss!!
You would have a pretty potent combination there and you didnt have to do much else but engine work.
Oh you will need a MP electronic comversoin kit (dist, ecu, ballast and wiring)
I had a 89 Dodge ram full size 4x4 and I took the TBI off and went carb and put that kit on and it worked GREAT.
Feel free to email me directly and I will give you all the help I can.
Good luck, Scott

Message: Hey 1FLAMED92DAK, nice to hear you went from a 240 to a 268 cam in a 5th Ave & still pass smog.
How'd you do it? I also own an m-body & was surfing this site for info on Magnum exh manifolds. I hear they flow as well as the old 340s, have smog fittings, & are not expensive.
There a great alternative to headers (rust, clearance, etc) But they look like they'd be awful close to the firewal on a car? Know anyone who's done this swap?

Message: Brandon,
FazDak has a good start for you. Also, if you are using the premag tranny, you need to cut out a slot in the bell housing for the crank position sensor to fit in. Also you need a crank position sensosr plate. If I remember right, you have a mechanical fuel pump on your premag, so you are going to need to run an electircal fuel pump.

mmm- I have 3 LA318's, 2LA340's and 2 LA360's all of em are in pieces.
I will fly you to my house and if you can get a 360 crank in a 318 block (without machine work) you will owe me a million dollars, how bout that bet?
You guys need to do better reserch before giving these folks wrong info.
Check every Mopar service book look in every Mopar Performance parts book, all list different cranks for 318/340 and 360 because the main journals ARE different size.

Message: Sorry dude but its on paper.
Worse than that is that the premag has a very narrow power band so it peaks and drops off at a fast rate as the mag makes its peake tq over a wider rpm range so even if its only 50hp (lol) more it feels like more because of how long its usable.
Dont mean to pee on anybodys parade.

Message: I've been looking in to this for a while. I still haven't quite figured out everything yet. I have an 88 3.9 w/ 3 speed auto. The truck has been good to me but w/ 190K miles it's got no compression left in it. When I got the truck 4 years ago the thing pulled hard, especially down low. Since then I've done alot of mods but the power has only gone down cause the engine's wearin out. I was looking for an engine to rebuild, figuring that it would be easiest to prep a new engine then just swap it in place of the old one. I can't not have a vehicle for weeks.
But over the last few weeks I've really been wondering how hard it would be swap a magnum engine in assuming I could find a thoroughly wrecked donor truck that still had a good drivetrain (I'd like to upgrade the tranny if possible to 4-speed auto or atleast 3 spd w/ OD, but that's not a major concern). I'm not really worried about the engine electronics. What has me concerned are all the gauges and accessory wiring. How different are the gen-I and gen-II trucks with the obvious exception of the engine itself.
Also, being in S. Florida I NEED AC, not an option. I'm thinking the compressor will probably have to come off the magnum engine, but will the lines connect to the big fitting on the firewall.
I really don't want to start tearing apart the interior any more than I have to. I don't mind pulling the instrument clusters but any more then that would have me seriously considering the sensibilities of my actions.
