Will the clanking noise of the timing belt cause any problems? Just inheirited a 97 3.9 mag with 65,000 miles on it. It has been sitting for over 3 years. Seems to run just fine, but that clanking noise at idle concerns me.

It's not unusual for that to happen it shouldn't cause any problems. Dodge came out with a a tensioner that mouts against the chain and keeps it from rubbing, not necesaary though.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Thanks! The local dealer talked me into replacing a belt tensioner which did absolutley nothing, maybe I can get my money back.....LOL Fat chance, but I am going to file a complaint b/c after reading other posts on this site he should have known full well what the problem was and how to fix it. I hate being ripped off!!

A friend of the family replaced my timing chain. He checked it by using a wrench behind the fan blade. He rocked it back and forth and based on the amount of play determined that the chain needed to be replaced. The 3.9 is well noted for it's rattling timing chain.

They are supposed to got 100k miles, however based on some of the other issues with the later model dak's ,it's not surprising that it may need replaced already.
