Subject: Power Steering Pump IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1998, Dodge Dakota, 2-door, 4x2, 3.9L V6, automatic trans. I have a problem with the power steering. I fill the p.s. reservoir, drive 20 miles, then begin hearing unusual sounds followed by stiffness in the steering. When I check the p.s. fluid level, the reservoir is empty. I've performed an end-to-end visual exam of the "feed" and "return" hoses but cannot visualize any problems or defects. Any suggestions or recommendations? Please e-mail me. Thanks! chudnell@snip.net

Message: it probably is leaking into the steering wheel. be careful - if your steering wheel is full of the fluid, you may need to drain it before it bursts.
are you serious that you don't see any leaks under the truck???

Message: Hello Billy Bob,
Yes, I do see a puddle of power steering fluid beneath the vehicle after I come to a complete stop. Sometimes..... not always..... but sometimes I will notice a trail of p.s. fluid on the ground as I travel down the road. When I went beneath the truck, I expected to find a hose blown from it's fittings or a hole in the hose. I did not find either.

Message: What you probably have is a hole in the high pressure hose that only opens up under load. Have some one turn the steering wheel back and forth with the engine idleing and watch the hose I bet you will see a stream of fluid.

Message: Yes have someone turn the wheel while looking under it, do not get under it without eye protection like I did, Power steering fluid in your eye sucks. I had a hose blown inside one of the compression fittings.

Message: "Leak" & "Big Dave",
Thanks for the good suggestions. Once the poor weather clears, I will do exactly as you suggest..... including the eye protection. Later, I'll update you with my results. Thanks again!

Power steering leak on the return line because of
hole in rubber hose. So I cut the line and replaced
it with a high pressure clamp. Every couple of weeks
the clamp lossens and it starts leaking again. I
tighten the clamp only to cut into the hose. The
hose is getting shorter and shorter and Im running
out of options...........help!!!...lol

Message: www.rockauto.com sells these hoses, as does Advance Auto. The return line comes with the metal and rubber lines as one piece. Very affordable, more so than a burned-out pump.
