Message: Hey, just a heads-up and a question, I just replaced my rotors and pads on my front brakes. I used NAPA parts, which I though were OK, but I am having a huge problem with them squeeling. At first I thought it might just be because they needed to break-in, but it has now been over 1,000 miles and still squeeling like hell. Anyone else have this problem with NAPA brakes. I am sure I installed them correctly, had a mechanic friend that works for the Dodge dealer help me.

Message: Nothing on the backside of the pads, they looked like semi-metallic.

Message: I was just wondering, because if they were metallic, and you didn't specify what type you wanted at napa, they like to squeel if there is even the slightest amount of brake dust and/or no lubrication.

Message: Did you put new shims the new pads? That might help. Did my front pads today and the new ones came with shims. O'Rielly Auto Parts brand.

Message: My truck is a 2000 model, and I did not say what kind, so they may be metalic. There does eem to be a hell of alot of dust coming off them. The pads did not come with shims, just the pads, and the clipping assembly. How would brake grease on the backing plate keep them quiet? It seams to me that putting grease anywhere near the brakes could be a disaster. The squelling only generally happens when at low speeds, high speed stops they seldom squeel. About a week after I put them on, I went back and cleaned them with some brake cleaner, it stopped for all of about 20 miles, then right back to squeeling...

Message: The grease is to lubricate the tracks that the pads slide in, so they don't squeal when they move. Metallics can squeal until they get very hot. If you apply them hard several times in a row and they get quieter, they're probably metallic. In that case, I'd ask for semi-metallic.

Message: Well, that actually answers my question, I think that these pads might be metallic then, I had to go back to the parts place because they gave be a set for a RAM, so they might have just given me metallic instead. Other than the obvious problem I am having are there any other drawbacks to metallic pads?
