Subject: PCV Valve ticking after oil change IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 97 Dakota about 2 months ago. 3.9L CC. I changed out the PCV Valve about 2 weeks ago, and just changed out the oil to AMSOIL this past weekend. After I put the Amsoil in I noticed the PCV valve was ticking like crazy, as it idles and revs up, but not as the revs come back down. Any ideas on why? I think I got the PCV valve at O'Reily's or AutoZone. I didn't notice it ticking before I changed the oil, and the oil change was overdue by about 1200 miles. I noticed that it still ticks when the intake hose is connected and the valve is out of the valve cover. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Message: The PCV valve is supose to make noise. If if was not making any noise, it needed replacing.

Message: I haven't ever noticed this with any of the other 15 vehicles I've driven beofre, and I've changed the PCV Valve on all of them. I can hear it when I'm in the cab and the hood is shut. So is it supposed to be that loud? Thanks again.

Message: I've never heard a PCV valve 'tick'. I think it's a valve lifter.

Message: Sure you got ALL the old valve out? I just mention this because I removed the vent tube on the opposite side on my 01. It looked a little funny, like not factory. When I stuck my finger in the hole to check for sludge I felt something. It took about ten minutes to get out, had to attach a shop vac to a small rubber hose to get it. Found a big plastic ring from the factory right angle hose fitting that had broken off. Maybe you got something like that bouncing around.

Message: the pcv valve doesnt have anything large enough that you would be able to hear from inside the cab of the truck. the ticking you have could be a lifter, fuel injector, or even a small exhaust or head gasket leak.

Message: I actually held the PCV valve in my hand, while still connected to the intake hose, while the ngine was running, and felt and heard that it was ticking. I could also tell that the little ball inside the valve was rapidly moving up and down causing the ticking. I think I'll try and go get a new PCV valve from the dealer, and hopefully that will help. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Message: So just put your borken one back in. You know the one that is all clogged up and doesn't make any noise.

Message: I also have the 3.9 engine. I found that if I use the recommend PCV, it ticks/rattles constantly.
I now use the PCV that is listed for the V8 engine. It works, and without the noise.
BTW, you can't tell any physical difference in the 2 PCVs.

Message: Thanks guys. I'll try buying another one for the V6 and get the one for the V8 just in case.
