Message: Hi KPG712,
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I was about to post my own question when I saw yours. I also have '98, 3.9 with the engine light on again. Rather than going to the shop to be told once again they can't retrieve the code, I'm attempting to retriev it myself by holding in the odometer's trip button while turning the key to run. All I get is "check" showing up. Would you please tell me how you're obtaining your codes. Thanks, Scott

Message: Hello Scott. I brought my truck to an autozone. They'll scan the code for free. I don't think u can get the codes on a '98 in the way you described. Good luck.

Message: I have an 01 Dakota. You have to turn the key in the ignition to run, off, run, off and then hold it to run. The computer will list all codes and then tell you when its done finding all those annoying leaks. I don't know if it works on 98s. I had a code of 0442 and it turned out to be a 12 dollar gas cap. I guess they can rust out internally breaking the seal. There's a whole bunch of s**t that triggers that code though and there have been tons of threads on this site on that particular code. Good luck

Message: have the same check eng lite. Missfire cyl#2 is erronious. Found out from jim grant (autozone) that code is from a vacuum leak inside the intake manifold. Dodge dealer has a fix for it.

Message: So what's the fix? Go to a dealer & get reamed? I pulled the neg. battery cable, lite went out. I also tightened the gas cap. We'll see if it stays out.

Message: Be careful about assuming that a code can only be set by one type of failure. A cylinder #2 misfire code can be evidence to several different failures. Diagnose it properly or spend lots of time and money throwing parts at it.

Message: Same year, same engine, same error--only for cylinder #5. After replacing plugs and wires, my mechanic suggested a dirty injector. After many(!)cans of injector cleaner was about to replace #5 when it finally cleared up. Good luck....

Message: Boy this sounds really common. My truck flunked emmissions test. misfire cyl #2 and exhaust leak.I took it back to the guy I bought it from last week. He has to fix it at his cost. For Scott, just buy a decent code reader.I payed 84.00 for mine. Also have a PST 5000 paid more than 300.00 for. These computer controlled vehicles bite the big one. Anyone have more input on this matter, please post it. Thanks, RTTA51
