Subject: belt tensioner noise?? IP: Logged
Message: Oh boy, now another noise. This time, a constant squeaking noise that I can't pinpoint. 97 Dak. V-6 2 wheel drv. Upon start-up I had a squeaking noise that sounded like the serpentine belt. Checked it, didn't seem too bad, but replaced it anyway. Squeak went away for about a month, then came back. Noise gets worse when truck is in reverse, especially when in reverse, but brakes are pressed. Any ideas?? Could it be the tensioner is just worn? 130,000 miles on the truck.

Message: 93dak, thanks, but I just replaced them a couple of months ago. This noise gets worse when I'm not even moving in reverse, just in gear with foot on the brake. It's definately coming from under the hood somewhere.

Message: dodgev6guy,
It you have replaced the bell and the squeak is back it's definitely your belt tensioner, replace it.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Ive had the same proble. It was 2 things. The bushing where the spring is on the tensioner was stuck so i took it apart and cleaned it. Then the front bearing on the alt start squeaking so i took the alt apart and cleand up the bushings on it. Works like new now. Saved money from not haveing to buy any parts.

Message: O yeah it sounds like its coming from the crank pulley or in
that area. Doesn't sound like a grinding its more like chrip or
squealing but its a rythme thing not constant

Message: If you changed the belt tensioner and the idler pulley (which caused squealing in mine), then I'd look at the harmonic balancer, see if it wobbles at idle. Mine wobbled about 1/4" out of its plane. Leaving it like that can wear out the crank bearings eventually.

Message: i check the balancer has no play in it. i look at it while idle and it looks like it is wobbles but then it dont. i dont know it my eyes are playin tricks on me lol. but i just got done cleaning crankshaft pully was pretty dirty plus i went back to napa to get new belt cuz the belt i bought was on it before i startd to fix all pulleys. i was thinkn belt got messed up again cuz the stress of a bad pulley. so far it quit but i guess have to wait to break in new belt to see. thanks bob
