Message: Hello all, I have a 1994 Dodge dakota w/auto O/D tranny that is acting funny, I mean funny! When I start it, cold, it whines for about 5 seconds then stops, but it shifts fine. When it gets hot it will tend to not want to shift. I have to rev it up quite high for it to eventually shift into the next gear. Once on the hwy. driven for about 1/2h-1h, it will slip and then there`s nothing!! Stuck on the road... I change the filter and fluid and it runs fine... for a while, then does the same thing once again. Don`t get me wrong, I love the truck, but I`m tired of messin` with it. Any suggestions, ANYTHING would be Greatly appreciated.

Message: Did you use good fluid ATF +3 or +4 Amsoil syn
only no dextron or cheap fluids they do not work
good in these transmissions
Try a bottle of Lubegard red it helps sticky valves

Message: Thanks J&J Auto for the response. When I changed the filter I used ATF +3 fluid, but like I said, it worked great for about a week then it started slipping and whinning again. Could it be that the seals are starting to go, or if possible, the bands need to be adjusted, or perhaps the tourque converter, what do you recommend? Firstly, I will try the Lubegard Red to see if there is any difference. Thanks

Message: with that age of truck, most likely the CLUTCH PACKS ARE WORN OUT and need to be replaced.

Message: ya know, you would figure that a self styled expert like Larry would see that the truck is 11 model years old, and if driven 15,000 miles for 10 years would have 150.000 or so on the clock, probably more, and the clutch packs don't last forever and are usually in bad shape by then. since the symtoms are symtomatic of worn clutches that is where an inexpert driver would start looking first. He has had it wrong before and does now.

Message: sounds like a trans shop owner
Need New Trans
I found these transmissions to be very strong and
most problems are in the valve body,
If the clutch packs or bands were bad he would
have found a layer of black material in the pan
but he did not say that so I would asume they
are not bad.
I have seen hundreds of A500 & 518 trans with way
over 250,000 miles and when disasembled were still
in good shape except for some leaky rings,
sticking servos and such.
Also there were some with bad and weak O/D and TCC
sols that just needed replacement the last resort
is a complete overhall which is rare in my shop
If the clutch packs were gone it would slip all
the time not once in a while

Message: Well said, Larry. The problem gets worse when hot, so very likely something in the valve body is sticking. I've never seen any problems with a RWD Chrysler tranny at that mileage. Even my 66 Plymouth with A904 was run DRY by my dad, slipped a little, but not noticeable except in gas mileage. Once filled, it shifted normally and never gave trouble in 30K more miles (170K total).

Message: Yes Bob
A little dirt and metal in pan is normal but piles
of clutch and band material or lots of metal chips
than its time for a tear down.
And this usualy occurs from the brain (valve body)
to much over lap binding heat buildup and failure
from sticky valves leaky seal rings
These trans are basicly the 904 and 727 with over
drive and lockup added
A500 904 6" clutch
A518 727 8" clutch

Message: O.K folks, here`s what I`ve done. I drained the tranny fluid, replaced it with Amsoil syn.($12 CDN/Litre)holycow!!! and added some GUNK transmedic. I took a chance and drove it to work today, about 20 miles. When I stop then start again, it will not shift into 2nd gear until I hit around 70/80kph. It shifts into 3rd no problem every time, but not O/D, It also slips when I take off.
The old fluid was dark and smelled burnt. I`ve worked on vehicles for a long time and I know this is not good at all. I`m not familiar with these trannys at all, So, what now???
Thanks, Frynk
