Message: Last three tanks averaged 16.5 around town with 3.9L 01 2WD 3.55. Disappointed, I get close to that with a 97 4L 4WD Explorer that weighs twice as much.

Message: sludge in the engine? I have a '95 CC 4x4 3.9L Auto with 147k miles. I used to get 13-14 mpg city and worse the longer I drove on the highways. I did a tune up and replaced my single O2 sensor, I got 14-15mpg and once got a 16.5 mpg run. To make the long story short, I had sluged in the engine, ran 1 quart of transmission fluid and got 18+ combined city/higway and 24 highway. I finally gave up and went with the billstein engine flush and was told .. it "removed ALOT of sludge". This after having a power loss and drivablity problems on the highway. I'm still on my first tank of gas after the service, but expect the mpg to be ~18 city and up to 25 highway (where it used to be a few months ago). The power has increased and it runs smoother. I am all stock or oem replacement parts and have a tonneau cover. I'll post again on the first fill-up and let you know how much the mpg actually is.

Message: 97 v6 dakota clubcab 5 spd 2wd w/3.92 rear end and Auburn LS system, w/shell on bed. Dynomax exhaust, K&N oem-style air filter, castrol oil, basic bosch platinum plugs, less than 10,000 on new wires/cap/rotor [autozone off the shelf], 31x10.5 Goodyear All-Terrain tires.
Around town and mixed town/freeway driving: 14.5 - 16.9 mpg.
All freeway at 60-65 mph: 20.1 mpg [using cruise control over 300 miles of driving this holiday: half there and half back].
Next step: cold air kit. Then maybe new headers and 3" exhaust pipes. Maybe cams and ported throttlebody. First I have to find a new house to park it at.

Message: Dan, please explain this transmission fluid trick of yours. Do you just run it through the engine, or drive it x miles with it in it? I may have a sludge problem but was told theres to many miles on my truck to flush it out. Also, my computer is spitting a full rich code (54??) at me so I am going to replace the O2 sensor and see if that helps.
