Subject: Mystery Leak Splatter IP: Logged
Message: My 1991 V-6 Dak has the origional radiator and is not leaking as far as I can tell.
The radiator cap is also origional as I can see is a 16LB. cap, I bought a new Stant 16LB. cap with the pressure release lever on top.
When I got down the road about 5 miles and lifted the hood I saw coolant splattered on top of the fan shroud and air filter housing and on the botton of the hood.
I felt around the cap and all was dry, can't see where the coolant was coming from.
So I had a new 13LB. Stant cap from my 1990 Ford Econoline, I put that in figuring the lower pressure would be better, WRONG it leaks antifreeze all over the top of the shroud.
I put back the origional 16LB. cap and NO leaks.
What is going on?
Is there a differance between a 1990 Ford Radiator cap and a Dodge? They fit right on.
I have had the origional cap on now for a week daily driving, no leaks.
Truck has 184,000 miles on it.
The radiator fins between the verticle cores is rotted, I can brush it off with my fingers, but there is no leaks.

Message: water pump going out and leaking from weep hole. Ford cap does not seal on Dodge radiator. DUH!!!

Message: Thanks DUH, The waterpump is dry no sign of any leaks except on top of the shroud and that is only with a new cap.
The old cap is still on today and every thing is dry no leaks.

Message: Yeah this one is tricky. Note that your truck is hot when you start seeing what, "steam". What's my point? The vapor is hard to see as it escapes from small pinholes in the radiator at the seams or the top plastic cap. It condenses on anything cool as soon as it hits it -- the hood the shroud the aircleaner. Just get a new radiator online and try not to pay more than $200. Get new hoses while your at it and new clamps. Get new heater hose and clamps and put in fresh coolant. Do It all yourself in an hour or less and come back if you get anymore problems. Just give up trying to find the leak and replace the radiator. I have the same truck and I think you did pretty good on the old OEM getting 14 years out of it. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER RADIATOR CAP OTHER THAN A DIRECT REPLACEMENT OR YOU WILL REALLY HAVE PROBLEMS. I wouldnt know how well a ford cap seals but the pressure release rating must be as specified for your application or you could lose coolant at normal temps using a lower pressure cap. A higher rated cap will either blow out an impellor seal or overheat that motor.

Message: Bill, I would agree with CP. I would change all the hoses including the radiator and heater hoses. Don't forget the water pump bypass hoses. Most radiator hose fail in the 5th year of service, they degrade from the inside out.

Message: my radiator on my 93 went bad last summer. the fins deteriated if you touched them they would desintigrate. i suggest you get a new radiator and be done with it.

Message: Thanks guys, I was afraid that would be the case, I will change radiator soon, hope it holds till I can get the $$$.
As mentioned before everything is origional and with my luck everything will go at once.
