Question, been noticing a rap, rap, rap, rapping type sound coming from motor while I am driving and putting truck under load (accelerating, going up hill and gassing it a bit more to keep speed, etc.). If I am cruising, I.E. get to speed limit, fairly even throttle; the noise goes away, until I need to accelerate again to gain speed, etc.

Is this normal (I have 98K miles)? Is it the timing chain/belt? Do I need the tensioner fix I've read about here?

It doesn't sound like metal on metal or anything like that, just a rap, rap, rap, almost like lifters or something... I do have a slight exhaust manifold leak, not sure if that is the source of the noise... I'll have to have wife accelerate while I have hood open and see if I can pinpoint better...

Later,

Shepp

it could be a sound you hear from your exhaust leak, fix that first. if you want to hear it for yourself you can just take use your hand on the throttle while you are under the hood so you have complete control. its alot easier then trying to coordinate with your wife. as for the sound you say...its hard to tell what you mean. where does it sound like its coming from? your timing chain would make noise all the time if it was that(you could hear mine rattle at idle, then again it was an inch longer then it was supposed to be at that point(106k)) good luck
