Message: Stuck a 40 series delta flow 2.5" inlet/outlet offset/offset in my stock 2.5" system. Alot throattier (especially when starting, kinda rummbles). Although you CAN definately hear it in the cab, but still not terribly bad. I like it. I have a 97 3.9 also.

Message: There are 3 types of 40 series mufflers. Original, Super & Deltaflow. Original is the most aggressive, Super series is a step less aggressive than original and Deltaflow is again less than Super (3rd in line). My deltaflow does rumble when started. I have remote start (with a 5spd standard tranny, it can work) so I can hear it outside the truck when I start it, kinda cool:)
It really depends on what kind of sound you are going for. Either a "holy crap" aggressive (w/ original) or a still aggressive but more mellow Deltaflow, or something in between.
I know I didnt answer your question directly, sorry, but hopefully this helps. Really just personal preference.
