Subject: Bernd - Gear Question IP: Logged
Message: Bernd, will the 3.92 gears from an R/T fit my Sport. I'm thinking the diff is larger, 9.25 as opposed to my 8.25 (?) Not sure on those numbers. How big a deal is that? Is a new diff to house them possible? Don't know much about gears yet.
TIA

Message: I think you'll need to get 3.90's from a 97 V-8 Dakota (which are available), but the R/T has a larger rear end housing and carrier. I don't think they will work.
While Bernd's busy playing "New Business Owner" here's some light reading:

Message: Sounds like you could've had a deal on a set of R/T gears for cheap? You could try your luck at a junk yard or two. There's bound to be a 97 V-8 model or two that's got the rear axle left (and that has 3.90's).....

Message: Don't be CW, I appreciate your advice as always. I talked to the vendor, they are in great shape with less than 10,000 miles on them. My mechanic said that even if I end up with them, I should have no trouble getting rid of them and he can probably find me some 8.25s.

Message: Lesley: If I had the money I would bid on them for my '79 1/2 ton, reg cab, long box, 318, auto, 3.21 gears. Ran a 15.6 on my fouth try with those 3.21s. Would like 3.91s for that truck. If ya get stuck with them let me know maybe we can work out something. Damn I have had the high performance bug for a long time. Built that old truck when I was 18.
