Subject: Code 43 troubles IP: Logged
Message: Hi all. I got a 1996 Dakota Club Cab SLT with a 3.9 A/T in it. Since I got it a few months ago, it has always had an intermittent stalling/backfiring problem. Most of the time it's ok. Then, out of nowhere, it stalls, stumbles, and backfires. Until today, it never set a code. Now I have a code 43 coming out of the 'puter. I checked the connector at the coil, and its fine as is my firing order and the plug wires.
The code 43 is listed in the Haynes manual as an "Ignition Control Circuit" problem. I later realized that this control circuit is in the PCM, unlike my 88 Camaro where it's a seperate unit.
Are there any tests I can do to isolate the problem more? I was going to buy a new coil but don't want to spend that money unless the one in there now is bad. Any way to test that circuit and see what's up with it?
Thanks!
Kevin

You can try closely checking wiring from coil to the computer , but pretty much seems coil is bad..

Message: hey thanks for your help. i'm going to go get a new coil and try it. the guy at the local hobby shop said that the wires could also be bad, but i found that sort of odd since it's intermittent. however, it always has a miss, but usually don't stall or hesitate. it was put on a scanner, by the way. multiple cylinder misfire; cylinder 3 misfire is what it came back with.

Message: I just put a new coil in it..it did nothing. It's an intermittent problem; sometimes it spits, sputters, backfires, and stalls, other times its ok. There is always some kind of a miss in it, though. I also know that the PCM wouldn't trip the code for no reason, so something is screwy. I'll check the plug and wire this weekend to see what's up. Would just one cylinder having problems make the truck feel as if it's going nowhere, cuz I put the pedal damned near to the floor and it just stays where its at and stutters and backfires.
How can I check that number 3 injector?

Message: I put 6 new plugs in my truck tonight, and it made little difference. It's going to the local mechanic on Monday to get a diagnostic check done and then repaired. I have an extended warranty through a company that sells automotive warranties that will cover the parts and labor but not diagnostic fees. Other than the plugs and cap/rotor, which seem OK to me, the parts now get expensive..injectors, distributor, PCM...I'll let the warranty cover those.

Message: del-not sure how it is on all dakotas, but i think most chrysler vehicles in general are the same. insert the key into the ignition, and turn it on and off 5 times really quick. after the 5th time, leave the ignition on. all the lights and the buzzing will go out except the check engine light. let it be for a minute. it will go off, then flash once, pause, then twice for a code 12, then flash again for each number in a code 9example; code 43-four flashes, pause, three flashes). I think it flashes each code 2 or three times before going to then ext. When it's done, it'll flash 5 times, pause, 5 times for a code 55, meaning all stored codes are retrieved. keep in mind this won't clear your codes.

Message: I also have the code 43, also have had the misfires and
backfires.
I unplugged the tps (throttle positioning sensor) and it
Stopped missing. And started running great. Even tho it didn't
have a code for it. So I figured the part needed replaced. I
replaced it. Plugged it back in and instantly got my miss back.
So I un plugged it, again. No miss. But I punched it up to
90mph and the check engine light started flashing. Ended up
being code 43 . It's a new coil and connection is solid. Idk
where to look next to solve this issue. I have tried swapping
used pcm as well. Didn't help.
Thanks
