Subject: Water pump replacement IP: Logged
Message: I am trying to replace the water pump on
my 1995 V6 magnum dak, at 90,000 miles. Everything
is going well, esp. with the manual on hand ;)
My problem is that there is a heater hose coming
out of the top drivers side of the pump. It clamps
on to a metal tube that also goes into a hole in
the pump, but is not part of the pump. it is sealed with something, but I don't know what, and
I don't know how to remove it..heat it and pull it out?
The clerks at the parts store had never seen one before and said maybe it was part of a bypass assembly I could get from the dealer...they also suggested that JB weld would work but I would never get it out again...that seems like the wrong thing to do...
Any ideas on what this is??
Thanks!
Oh yeah and regarding the disasembly order:
I found it much easier to first
drain/remove the radiator, then the fan shroud
then the pump, and get the fan off the pump
once it was unbolted. I wedged a screw driver in
between loosened pulley bolts and used a vice
grip to turn the 1.5 inch fan bolt w/out the pulley turning.

Message: Believe it or not, that metal tube is not sealed to your water pump.
I had to replace my 93's waterpump last year. My new water pump came with a new o-ring, and that tube is pressed in and an o-ring seals it.
Now even though the tube is only pressed in, getting it out is nearly impossible. I ended up having to cut the aluminum of the old pump next to the steel tube and then using something like a big screwdriver to spread the aluminum apart to make the hole bigger so that I could remove the tube!!!!
Be careful not to smash the tube. I used a wooden dowel rod inside the tube so that I wouldn't bend it or crimp it while I was working with it.

Message: i replaced mine on my 93 a couple years go, we heated the crap out of it and twisted with vise grips to get it out, took some work and you have to be careful not to crush the tube, but good luck.

Message: I think that the dealer sells the metal tube and O-ring as an assembly. My O-ring went bad and I went to the dealer for a new one. The parts guy asked me if I wanted the tube also- he said that many times the tube corrodes and needs to be replaced.
