Subject: Bad MPG-what do other Pick Ups Get? IP: Logged
Message: There are a lot of complaints about the 3.9l getting poor gas mileage.
What is the mpg of other Pick Ups?
This might make us feel better.

Message: My '95 CC 4x4 3.9 used to get around 18-20 combined highway and city. With my tonneau on I got up to 25 mpg on long highway trips. I have been getting 13mpg city but I just replaced plugs, wires and oxygen sensor. I have about 143k miles on it. I'll find out when i fill up this weekend what i'm getting.
My brother-in-law gets 12-14 mpg in their 2002 (i think) durango 4x4 with 4.7
both vehicles are pretty much stock from the factory.

Message: My 2000 Cherokee Sport 4X4 automatic with a 4.0L inline six gets about 15-16 city and 20 strictly highway. My Dad's 2002 5-speed 2-wheel drive F-150 with the 4.2L V-6 gets about 17-18 mixed and as good as 21 highway, and my old '78 F-100 would get about 14-16 city and as good as 20-21 highway (under 65mph), but as bad as 17 mpg at 70-75 mph on the highway. It was a 2-wheel drive with a 300 inline six and a three on the tree.

Message: My 92 Dakota Club Cab 4WD with cap, 3.9L V-6, 4-speed auto is all stock except K&N drop-in filter. I get 20 mpg highway, 17 city.
Your right foot is your best modification for better gas mileage.

Message: I hate to say it but one of the things our Dakotas have going against them as far as MPG is concerned is their MAP sensor based fuel system. Most of the GM and Ford V8 trucks are using a mass airflow system which is far more precise than the MAP system. Thats why alot of those trucks are getting 20 mpg and run like stink too.

Message: hey bob. I'm thinking of getting the K&N filter too. Have you noticed any difference between it and the stock filter? I'm going to leave the factory in take system intact for the time being.

Message: I have a 98 Dakota, standard cab, short box, no air conditioning. I recently did an 800 Km trip (400 there and 400 back) on slightly less than 2/3 a tank of gas. I have the 83 liter tank. For those south of the border, thats about 500 miles on about 16 gallons of gas. So, given that I had perfect driving conditions (suuny not too hot not too cold) and that I have done some mods to the truck such as: cold air intake; high flow exhaust; removed the clutch fan; V8 TB and coupled with the fact that I was driving an average of 68 mph (110 kph). The roads were all back roads with many steep hills and valleys but after all was tallied up I got an astounding 31 miles per gallon!
Now I can assume that I will be challenged on this and its my word versus theirs, but since I am the only one to benefit from it, I am sticking to my story. I have a photo of the dash with the fuel guage at slightly more than 3/4 full, and over 350 km on the odometer.
Needless to say, I LOVE this truck!

Message: greyDAK, I can beleive you a little, because before I went to modifying my truck too heavily I was getting 30 - 32 mpg... That was with the basic mods that you have pretty much listed... The best I have gotten since all of the mods was 27 mpg and that was before I relocated my IAT to where I could get a little more fuel... I also drive a little harder now than I did then, but anyhow I usually get 22/23 mpg now and at best 24 mpg... I've got the 15 or 16 gallon fuel tank and when I had it filled to the brim the best I think I got out of a half of a tank was 240 or 250 miles... That was when I got 27 mpg average... Right now I get about 180 out of a half of a tank getting 23 mpg...

Message: I don't feel so bad now. The 04 CC SLT 4x4 w/ 3.7L V6 is stated as getting 16/20 mpg. Same model as mine, only with 3.7 vs 3.9 and newer vehicles are supposed to be getting better mpg and few emissions. I'm still curious how you gets get 20+mpg in the city. I don't drive over 55 and am getting 15. All stock, new oxygen sensor, autolight plugs and wires, new pcv, new cat.

i'm happy. i had an '83 GMC S truck w/2.8 v6 & 5spd that got 30 on the highway but it wasn't 1/2 the truck my dak is.

Message: Dan M, I found absolutely no difference in gas mileage with the K&N drop-in filter, and that's running it both with the intake hose removed (snorkel on underhood air) and stock. But I did notice a little more power at the low end, and for sure a throatier truck rumble from the engine.
greyDak's claim of 31 mpg is dubious. From his post, he relied on reading the gas gauge rather than topping off the tank before and after, which is the only true way to read it. These gauges are not accurate, and are FAR from linear.

Message: Thanks for the explanation Bob. I will go adhead and get one just because i can clean it and re-use it.
I do miss getting the 18-20 combined. I am going to check the intake for any blockage or leaks. I don't think i drive hard enough for 15 mpg.

I have used synthetic oil since it was new. I'm now running 30x9.50 15 Cooper discovery S/T's at anywhere from 30 to 50 psi depending on the where and how I'm driving. Message: I think we need to put this bad mileage thing behind us. It sound as if we get what other pick ups get. That makes me feel better.
I get about 20.5 mpg on the highway 65-70mph without a/c and about 17mpg in the city no a/c - I really don't drive it very much in the city.
2000 Quad Cab, 4X4, skid plates, automatic, a/c, towing package, HD cooling package, transmission cooling, tanaou cover, alumium tool box, front tow hitch, K&N filter package, spray in bed liner; 31 x 10.5 tires; current mileage 37K

Message: I recently bought a 2004 SXT 3.9 v6, extended cab, 24k mi. (Probaly paid a little too much)
The first time I filled it up I got 18mpg, the second 19mpg.(I'm trying for 20)
This is in all kinds of driving, city, hwy, hills, flat, quite varied.
My son bought a 2003 Sport new. He has done a few modifications. K&N breather, chip, Hi-V coil & wires. He gets between 17 and 21 mpg depending where he is driving, and how hard he is driving.
(The coil & wires seemed to help)

But if you love your truck what the hell should it matter. I had 90 1/2 ton 2wd with a 360 that couldn't get better than 11mpg.
