Subject: Throwout bearing? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, i've had a jangling noise for the longest time and it's the most annoying sound i've ever heard. Sounds like metal hitting metal. It only happens when I hit the gas pedal, in all gears, even in neutral. Ever since i've heard the sound i've tried to pinpoint the source without much luck. I thought a heat plate might be loose, so i checked and even took a couple of them off to see if the sound would stop. No luck. I also thought there might be something in the catalytic converter jangling around inside but I took the exhaust off and the cat is empty. It had gutted itself right before I put my new exhaust on. I thought perhaps something was loose underneath the truck but I banged on pretty much everything with a rubber mallet and not a sound. I've pinpointed it to the lower half of the front end of my truck. It really sounds like it's coming from the transmission, however it is difficult to tell since it's so loud under there. I had spoken to a few friends of mine... one told me it was a spark knock.. what the heck is that, sounds like bs to me and another friend actually grasped my extremely hot exuahst pipe, pre cat; quite a bad burn. Idiot! All in all I can't locate the problem. One friend of mine that actually knows the ins and outs of mechanics told me it was probably my throwout bearing. "I'm 99% sure it's your throwout bearing.", were his exact words. Anyway does that sound like something that would make a whole lot of noise if it was in need of changing? Sorry for the essay. Thanks for the help.

Message: from past experience, the throwout bearing usually makes more noise when you depress the clutch pedal. what yr truck do you have? if it's an '87 or '88 it may be the heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold. i'm not sure what yrs used them.

Message: 57000 mi... i'm jut going to get a new clutch. The Autozone brand, Valucraft, has a lifetime warranty so I might as well change it out. Hopefully that stops the sound. It is so annoying.

Message: Yea, so, the sound occurs whether or not i press the clutch. In all gears, neutral whatever. I pushed the clutch in and revved the engine and the sound was present. So, it's leading me to think that it isn't my throwout bearing but the sound still seems to be coming from the tranny. I have no trouble shifting ever. I'm confused.

No, it's just the opposite. A bad throwout bearing will rattle more in neutral with the clutch out than when disengaged.

Message: I don't know if the tranny is leaking. It doesn't appear to be when i'm under the truck. Could the throwout bearing make a noise whether the clutch is engaged or not?

Message: It's been quite awhile. I have upgraded my sound system and it drowns out the sound. However I still know it's there and I know other people can hear it. I've looked at a few sites regarding the same noise on other vehicles with one major difference... They complain of sound with the clutch out and the vehicle in neutral. Mine makes the sound through all gears... even in neutral. Sounds like "a marble in the bottom of a coffee can." I guess thats the best way to describe it. It is coming from the transmission case... I am utterly confused...

Message: Any luck finding the source? if not try grabbing the tail shaft and give the trany a shake. COLD AND NOT RUNNING. if you have access to a lift do it on a lift if no noise start the truck get it up on the lift with some kind of probe listen around. Also lift the boot for the shifter and check all that out you,ll find it. good luck

Message: I just had my throwout bearing replaced in November 'cause it was noisy (when in neutral or otherwise the the clutch pushed in). I also had the pressure plate and clutch pad relaced while they were in there. When finished, they showed me my old parts. The clutch pad and pressure plates both looked nearly new. That's with 175,000 miles and having once towed my 8000 lb boat from fla to Maine!

Message: No luck pinpointing the sound yet. I've been under the truck more times than I can remember. I've had quite a few other people down there also. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the Catalytic converter. It's not, the Cat is gutted. I had a buddy go down to check it out, after he went for a quick ride with me, and what does he do? He touches the freakin exhaust pipe and burns the crap out of his hand! Ha! That was stupid. Anyway, It sounds like its coming from the Cat, but since it isn't the cat, the next closest thing, which is right freakin next to it, is the front of the tranny case, where the clutch would be. That is the only other thing next to the catalytic converter. My new subwoofer drowns it out, I can't even hear it. But just knowing your baby is broke doesn't make you happy.

Message: I have gone through what you are going through. I thought is was my cat, had it cut off and a pipe put in(the cat was old and not working anyways) and a new muffler, still made that noise. I went through my truck more times than I can remember, I finally found out it was my heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold. The spring that acts like a thermostat must have worn out over time, so it was just flapping there when ever I accelarated and let off the gas. I used some flexable wire and wired open the heat riser valve. Now I have a quiet truck.

YOU the man. I went outside today and started the truck (91 3.9l 4x4, 145,000 mi). Opened the hood and turned the valve a little then reved the engine. NO MORE RATTLE. I let the valve go and revved it, Plenty of rattle. Hmmm. So anybody have any service tips for the heat riser valve other than hitting it with penetrating oil?
