Subject: 3.9l MPG Highway avg 20.5 IP: Logged
Message: I think I have what must be the heavest (see below) 3.9L Dakota and get a steady 20.5 mpg on the highway - 65-70mph no a/c.. I don't drive it in city traffic here in Georgia.
I think the answer is that I use a 40 psi tire pressure in all tires. The mileage is lower when I go faster. I get this mileage when I don't use a/c. I don't track the times when I use the a/c.
So here is the question. I seem to get better mileage the hotter the air tempeture. Why is that? Could it be the HD cooling I have?
2000 Quad Cab, 4X4, skid plates, automatic, a/c, towing package, HD cooling package, transmission cooling, tanaou cover, alumium tool box, front tow hitch, K&N filter package, spray in bed liner; 31 x 10.5 tires; current mileage 37K

Message: I have a '95 dakota CC 3.9 auto 4x4 . I used to get 22-26 mpg on the highways with A/C - depending no how fast I drove (this was back in indiana). I haven't driven highway speends only for some years now. I do drive some city traffic here in the Atlanta area - only 15-20 minutes, max speed of 45mph, a few stop lights but not bumper-to-bumper traffic. I was getting ~13MPG. I just put in new plugs, wires and 0xygen sensor, I'll let you know what i'm getting in the city, from that i can make a good guess what highway would be.
The only non stock options I have are tonneau cover and autolight plugs and wires. I don't know what the weight difference is between our trucks, but yours should get slightly better MPG because of age. Oh yeah, I'm around 144k miles now (was 40k when i got the truck and put the tonneau on). The tonneau cover did add ~3-6 mpg depending on driving speed for me.
I would expect to see better milage at lower speeds and with no A/C. I'm not sure about the tire pressure or HD cooling - I would be interested in know the answer to that.

Message: I have a '91 2 wheel drive w/ a 5-speed, best it has ever gotten is 21 strictly highway driving, usually 15-16 running around town. Overall average is around 16-17 mpg mixed driving. I had a '78 Ford F-100 that had a carbed 300 inline six three speed manual that got about the same in town, but driving that 3 speed on the interstate it would get only 17 (not 20 or 21). Slow that truck down to 55-60 on long trips it would get 20 or 21 mpg however. That truck did not have AC or a 5-speed so I don't miss that part but it does seem like the 3.9 (239 c.i.)should get better gas milage than a 4.9 (300 c.i.) in town and should be able to see 22-23 mpg highway w/ a 5-speed.

Message: I have a 92 4x4, club cab with cap, 3.9 auto. with 131,000 miles. I get 20 mpg highway, 17 around town. Maybe your 'highway' speed is over 65 mph. Gas mileage drops off rapidly as you go faster. Try a lighter foot.

Message: My 94 v6 4x4 with 178k miles gets about 18-20 hwy mpg. It was 21 when new. the only "mod" is a k&n filter in the stock housing I've used synthetic oil from the time it was new. I run 30x9.50 Coopers at anywhere from 30 to 50 psi depending on how and where I'm driving.
