Subject: power loss, O2, converter? help IP: Logged
Message: I am having power loss problems with my dakota 1987 dakota with a 3.9L in it. If im starting to spin in the mud or snow it will bog right down and the tires will then hardly spin. then when I let off the gas it will die. Also if I go to warm it up in the winter it has a hard time staying running and the exhaust smells kinda gasy. If then I rev it up it comes out really dark if not black. just running it down the road it seems fine. What else could it be?

Message: The 87 still had a carb right? it sounds as if the float is sticking causing it to run very rich
U can get it rebuilt or buy a new one.
Before u get the carb rebuilt, check the shaft on it if its loose ur better off replacing it cause it will never idle right even after a rebuild
since u ran so rich more likely then not the cat is clogged
Also after putting a new or rebuilt carb on it and after checking the cat do a carbon removal...
Warm up engine...
Take a cup of water and trickle it down the carb bores, dumping as much water as the engine can take without stalling, while actuating the throttle by hand so it doesnt stall.
Run it a bit after just to be sure no water remains anywhere
