Subject: IAT relocation IP: Logged
Message: I took out the IAT sensor and plugged the hole. I am hesitant of lengthening the wires for it and drilling a hold in my intake because someone mentioned a voltage drop. Is it ok to just leave the sensor hooked up and away from the engine, so it doesnt get as hot as it does when it's threaded into the manifold?

Message: one - don't worry about "voltage drop "
there is only a very small current involved , so
2 to 3 feet of same size/guage of wire will NOT
affect anything..
two - better to install it in the intake tubing
where it will see the incoming air temp.

Message: sounds good, I do plan on doing that but not right away, I was just asking about a "for the time being" fix. I giess it doesnt matter where I put it in the intake tract?

Message: it really shouldn't matter where, probably just after the filter. but, some trucks won't respond well to it. my '00 didn't. sucked gas like crazy(went from 18mpg in the city to 15mpg) and didn't really enhance performance so i moved it back.

Message: Same here, it just made my mileage worse and didnt do anything for power. I moved mine back to the manifold too.

Message: Here's my question on the topic.
How does the PCM actually read the IAT sensor? Is it reading voltage or is it reading miliamps?
I'm in the control business and I write software for similar processors with inputs and outputs. Only thing is these controllers are used in the HVAC world. Allot of sensors (transmitters if they have voltage or amp inputs) will send a miliamp signal to the processor. The reason for using miliamps is because the range they send will not change no matter how much wire you run as long as your supply (excite) voltage is constant. What might be tricky in determining that is repair manuals may have you measure voltages for testing purposes. That is true, you can do that but it still doesnt mean the processor is reading voltage.
For example, a real common input signal in my feild is 4-20ma. I know from working on it for years that the 4-20ma will equal 2-10 volts dc which makes it easier to measure with a meter.
Ok, bottom line here before i babble too much. If the PCM is reading miliamps from the IAT, you can wire that thing in your wifes car if you wanted to, wont make a difference. Just make sure its a good clean and corrossive free. If its voltage or even resistance, voltage drops will matter some but I even highly doubt that extending the wire some wont hurt much at all as long as its good and clean. I recommend stripping the insulation on the ends and soldering. Then some shrink tubing and you'll be all set. I also used to be a truck mechanic. ( the big rigs) Reconnecting wires are very critical up north here where salt is used on the roads allot in the winter. I've seen regular butt connectors wrapped in shrink tubing corrode to nothing in just a few months of over the road driving. Soldering by far holds up the best in my book. Just allot more work compared to a wire nut or butt connector.
So.....what's the PCM really interested in reading?

Message: It is recommended to put it in the intake around 7 to 8 inches from the air hat unless I'm mistaken...
If you have other mods such as intake, tb, head work, timing advance, msd ignition, cam, fuel sync advance and so forth you really won't notice a fuel mileage drop, infact I just did mine this last weekend and I can honestly say that I'm actually getting just as good or better fuel mileage for some real weird reason...
I have also noticed a definate hp increase because it accelerates much better when passing people or over all just driving around...
You also shouldn't have to worry about extending the wires with just going a few inches from the air hat...
All I can say is try it and if you have good results stick with it... If not go back to where it was...

Message: it's a 2001. I'm trying to search for that thread that had the picture of the modified crank sensor.
I made a ram/cold air intake scoop for the stock airbox, so unless I put the sensor IN the air hat I will need to lengthen the wires to get it to reach to the airbox. I was hoping I would be able to notice the benefits/gas mileage difference by just leaving it zip-tied to the AC hose before I actually drill into anything.
